Eco-Friendly Materials & Long Life Design

SECTION 1 - Observation

Most craft kits are designed as consumables.

Packaging is single-use.
Tools are temporary.
Accessories are replaced repeatedly.

From a distance, many materials look identical, especially plastics — but their lifespan and environmental impact differ dramatically.

In diamond painting, plastic is unavoidable.
The difference is whether it becomes waste or a tool.

A pen used once is waste.
A pen used for years is equipment.

The environmental impact is not determined only by the material — it is determined by how long the material remains useful.

Section 2 - Mechanism

“Plastic” is not a single material.

There are major differences between:

• Petroleum plastics (permanent waste)
• Bioplastics (plant-based polymers)
• Compostable polymers (controlled breakdown)
• Reusable structural polymers (long-life tools)

Many low-cost kits use the cheapest possible moulded plastics because replacement is expected.

We instead treat every component as either:

Consumable material → must be biodegradable or recyclable
Permanent tool → must be durable enough to avoid replacement

Environmental impact is driven more by replacement frequency than by raw material type.

A durable object used for years produces less waste than many “eco” objects designed to be thrown away.

SECTION 3 - Studio Method

Our material choices follow a simple rule:

If it must exist — it must last.
If it cannot last — it must safely return.

Tools (Long-Life Design)

  • 3D printed toolkit components using plant-based PLA filament

  • Reusable trays, pens and straighteners designed for years of use

  • Structural strength prioritised over disposability

Drills

  • Standard drills selected for stability and longevity

  • Extended palette drills produced in water-washable resin systems

  • Designed for permanence in the artwork — not disposal

Canvas & Adhesives

  • Long-term adhesion systems to prevent artwork failure and re-replacement

  • Durable substrate cotton and linen to avoid premature disposal

Packaging

  • Compostable mailers (cornstarch / PLA / PBAT blends)

  • Recyclable boxes and paper components

  • Biodegradable drill bags and protective wraps

We accept higher cost to prevent short-life materials entering landfill.

Section 4 - Mechanism

Instead of reducing plastic count alone, the goal is reducing lifetime waste generation.

Compared to disposable kit design:

Typical Hobby Kit

  • Tools replaced repeatedly

  • Packaging discarded immediately

  • Short material lifespan

  • Frequent repurchase cycle

Studio Material Approach

  • Tools remain in use long-term

  • Packaging returns safely to environment

  • Artwork durability prevents re-making

  • Waste generated once, not repeatedly

The environmental difference compounds over time.

Every material in our kits was evaluated individually — not assumed.

Sustainability matters when measured.

Here is how each component performs.

SECTION 5 - Practical Takeaway

  • Reusability and responsible material choice work together to reduce impact

  • Long-lasting tools reduce overall waste compared to repeated disposables

  • Eco materials still need thoughtful use and appropriate disposal

  • Packaging returns to the earth — tools stay with you

  • Environmental impact depends on design, use, and disposal

  • True sustainability considers the entire lifespan of the product

STUDIO NOTE - CONTEXT & LIMITATIONS

Diamond painting cannot be completely plastic-free.

The goal is not elimination — it is responsibility.

We design materials to fall into one of two categories:

Permanent tools that remain in use
or
Materials that safely break down

This balance produces a hobby that can be enjoyed long-term without behaving like a disposable product industry.
