PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Winter's Glass stretches across a vast frozen mountain lake beneath the gentle warmth of a winter sunset. From the immediate foreground, translucent blue-grey ice extends almost uninterrupted towards a distant wall of snow-covered forest and rugged alpine peaks.
Beneath the clear surface, subtle fractures, trapped bubbles and overlapping layers reveal the depth of the frozen water without disturbing its remarkable smoothness. Broad areas remain almost glass-like, carrying softened reflections of the surrounding mountains, dark evergreen forest and pale golden sky.
Snow gathers along the distant shoreline and across rocky slopes, weighing heavily upon the branches of conifers that encircle the lake. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges rise towards the horizon, their exposed rock softened by winter snow and atmospheric haze.
The setting sun rests between the distant peaks, washing the valley in restrained shades of cream, peach and pale gold. Its reflection travels across the frozen surface towards the viewer, warming portions of the otherwise cool blue ice. Empty, pristine and seemingly endless, the lake appears suspended between the stillness of the surrounding mountains and the final light of day.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Some of the most remarkable natural skating surfaces begin with an unusually simple combination of conditions, calm water, sustained cold and little or no snow during the early stages of freezing.
When the surface of a freshwater lake cools to freezing point under calm conditions, individual ice crystals begin forming across the water. As freezing continues downward, these crystals can develop into a comparatively dense, transparent layer often referred to as clear ice or black ice. The term “black ice” in this context does not mean dangerous road ice; on lakes, clear ice can appear dark because the water beneath is visible through it.
Snow can dramatically change what happens next. A layer of fresh snow insulates the ice beneath it and can slow further freezing. Snow may also become saturated with water and refreeze into more opaque, whitish ice containing considerably more air. For this reason, periods of cold, dry and relatively snow-free weather can produce exceptionally smooth and transparent lake surfaces.
Wind also plays a role. If water remains rough while freezing begins, the developing surface can become irregular. Calm conditions allow ice to form with far fewer disturbances, occasionally creating enormous naturally smooth expanses.
Even apparently flawless ice, however, continues responding to temperature, water movement and changing loads throughout winter. Visual appearance alone cannot establish whether natural ice is safe to skate on; local measurements and official safety guidance are needed before anyone ventures onto a frozen lake.
