FRAMING REFERENCE GUIDE

Everything you need to know about artwork sizing, framing, presentation and placement.

1. ORIENTATION AND RATIOS

Our artworks are available in a variety of orientations and aspect ratios to suit different spaces, framing systems, and presentation styles. Depending on the composition, an artwork may be offered in Portrait (vertical), Landscape (horizontal), or Square formats.  Ratio is always written as width (W) : height (H)

Each artwork is carefully prepared in the formats that best preserve its composition and visual balance. While many designs are available in multiple orientations or ratios, not every artwork is suitable for every format. Rather than cropping or stretching an image to fit a particular size, we only offer ratios that maintain the artistic integrity of the original composition.

For example, a panoramic landscape is best presented in a wide horizontal format, while a close-up wildlife portrait may only be available in portrait or square proportions. This ensures that every print, canvas, and diamond painting remains faithful to the original artwork.

  • A 50 × 70 cm artwork (5:7 ratio) works beautifully as a tall portrait piece, but in a wide space above a bed or console it may be equally effective when offered in a landscape version.

  • Before ordering, consider both the available wall space and the shape of the artwork itself. The best presentation is achieved when the artwork's natural proportions complement the room rather than being forced into an unsuitable format.

  • Tip: Before ordering, use painter's tape to mark out the exact dimensions on your wall. This is one of the easiest ways to visualise how the artwork will relate to your furniture, ceiling height, and surrounding space.

2. PAPER PRINTS

When you check out, you will be asked to choose how you want the ink laid out on your paper print. This determines your final aesthetic.

Option A: Art Poster Print  (Otherwise known as a Full Bleed No Margin cut)

The artwork is printed and cut to the edges of the paper, with no white border. Choose this option if you plan to use a frame with its own matting, or simply prefer the artwork to extend to the edge of the frame.

Option B: Art Poster Print with White Border

The artwork is scaled slightly to leave a clean 5 mm unprinted white border on all four sides. This creates subtle gallery-style breathing room and is ideal if you would like to frame the print without separate matting.

The white border does not change the overall size of the paper. For example, a 50 × 70 cm print remains 50 × 70 cm; the printed artwork is simply slightly smaller to accommodate the 5 mm border. This means your print will still fit the corresponding standard metric or imperial frame.

3. CANVAS PRINTS

Your canvas will arrive carefully packaged and rolled, ready to be stretched over wooden stretcher bars.

Standard deep stretcher bars are approximately 38–40 mm (1½ inches) deep. To ensure there is sufficient canvas to wrap around the sides of the frame and secure comfortably to the back, we provide an additional 75 mm (3 inches) of canvas on all four sides.

The artwork itself is printed at the full size you ordered. The wrap area is also printed in full colour, allowing the artwork to continue seamlessly around the sides of the finished canvas. Depending on the artwork and the size selected, we achieve this by either extending the design naturally beyond the edges or carefully enlarging the image to provide the additional artwork required for the wrap.

If you do not intend to use stretcher bars, the additional canvas can simply be trimmed away, leaving the artwork at the original size ordered for mounting in a suitable traditional frame.

White Border

Your canvas will arrive with a small white border around the outer edge. We provide an additional 75 mm (3") of canvas on every side to make stretching and mounting easier.

The first 50 mm (2") is printed in full colour, allowing the artwork to wrap cleanly around a standard 40 mm (1½") deep stretcher frame and continue slightly onto the back. This helps ensure that no white canvas is visible along the sides once stretched.

A further 25 mm (1") of white canvas is provided beyond the printed area, giving you space to grip the canvas with stretching pliers and staple it securely to the back of the frame without handling or damaging the printed artwork.

4. HOW TO POSITION YOUR ARTWORK

Once your art arrives, hanging it correctly makes all the difference:

  • The Gallery Rule: Hang your art so the center of the image is 145 - 152 cm (57 to 60 inches) from the floor. This is standard eye-level for galleries and museums.

  • Above Furniture: If hanging above a sofa, bed, or console table, leave about 15 - 30 cm (6 to 12 inches) of breathing room between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

  • Proportion: The artwork (or collection of artworks) should span about 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the furniture it sits above.

  • Spacing Multi-Panel Art: If you are hanging a split-canvas, such as a two, three or five panel artwork, leave a tight, consistent gap of 2.5 - 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) between each panel. If the gap is too wide, the image will feel disconnected and lose its impact.

  • Hanging Gallery Sets: When hanging multiple panels or a gallery wall, treat the entire grouping (including the gaps between them) as one single piece of art when calculating your center point and furniture proportions.
