PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Snow Harbour opens onto a secluded expanse of clear blue water embraced by towering walls of snow and ice. In the foreground, transparent shallows reveal pale submerged formations beneath luminous turquoise water, gradually deepening through cyan and blue towards the centre of the sheltered basin.

Along the left, immense sculpted walls rise abruptly from the water, their surfaces broken by deep folds, vertical fissures and softly rounded accumulations of snow. Across the opposite shore, lower frozen embankments sweep around the water's edge, creating the impression of a naturally enclosed harbour. Dark rock emerges intermittently from the surrounding white landscape, while distant mountains appear between the frozen walls beyond.

Bright daylight illuminates the scene beneath a clear blue sky scattered with soft cloud. Shadows settle within crevices and beneath overhanging ice, revealing subtle layers of pale blue within the otherwise brilliant white formations. Enclosed on almost every side by the frozen landscape, the remarkably calm water becomes a quiet centre within a vast world of snow and ice.

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Glacial landscapes are continually reshaped by the movement of ice, the accumulation of snow and the seasonal movement of meltwater. Over long periods, glaciers can deepen valleys, widen existing depressions and scour underlying rock, leaving behind basins and channels that may later collect water as ice retreats or melts.

Around their margins, enormous quantities of snow can accumulate over successive seasons. In sufficiently cold environments, older snow is gradually compressed beneath newer layers. Individual snow crystals become increasingly compact, passing through a dense granular stage known as firn before eventually contributing to glacial ice when accumulation persists for long enough.

The walls surrounding glacial waterways are rarely static. Snowfall, wind, melting, refreezing and the slow deformation of ice continually alter their surfaces. Crevasses can open as ice moves across uneven terrain, while exposed faces may develop ridges, fractures, overhangs and layers revealing differences in snowfall and compression.

Where these frozen formations surround a protected body of water, the landscape can resemble a harbour constructed entirely by natural processes. Shelter from surrounding ice and terrain may leave sections of water comparatively calm even while the larger frozen environment continues to change around them.
