Fractured Light

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Fractured Light opens across an immense frozen lake enclosed by snow-covered mountain ranges. Clear blue-grey ice dominates the foreground, divided by an intricate network of pale fractures that intersect, separate and disappear beneath the frozen surface. Variations in depth shift the ice from translucent turquoise and slate blue to darker passages beneath the foreground.

Low winter sunlight hangs above the distant peaks, casting a brilliant reflection across the centre of the lake. Warm gold catches the edges of selected fractures and travels across the otherwise cool surface, while surrounding snowfields retain softer shades of white, silver and blue. Dark exposed rock interrupts the mountain slopes, creating strong contrast against the sweeping expanses of snow.

Along the near shoreline, small rocky outcrops and sparse evergreens frame the frozen basin without interrupting its scale. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges recede towards the luminous horizon. The combination of fractured ice, uninterrupted snow and low directional light transforms the lake into a naturally formed mosaic extending towards the distant mountains.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Frozen lakes are rarely as motionless as their surfaces suggest. As freshwater cools, it behaves unusually: water reaches its greatest density at approximately 4°C and sinks, while colder water remains nearer the surface. Once the uppermost layer reaches freezing point, ice begins to form and, because ice is less dense than liquid water, remains floating above it.

After a continuous ice cover develops, changing temperatures place that surface under considerable stress. Ice contracts during periods of intense cooling and expands as temperatures rise. The resulting forces can produce long fractures, pressure cracks and intersecting lines extending across and sometimes through different levels of the ice.

Some fractures subsequently fill with water and refreeze, while others trap tiny bubbles or develop frost along their edges. Repeated cycles of freezing, contraction, expansion and refreezing can therefore create remarkably complex patterns without the lake having physically broken apart into separate floating pieces.

Clear ice can also reveal considerable visual depth. Light passes through relatively bubble-free ice before being scattered or absorbed within the water and frozen layers below, producing colours ranging from transparent grey and pale cyan to rich blue. Under low sunlight, fractures can become particularly visible as their irregular surfaces scatter and reflect light differently from the surrounding ice.
