PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
When the Rains Come captures a young Black Rhinoceros standing amid open grassland beneath the immense weight of an approaching storm. The calf occupies the foreground, its compact body and still-developing horns sharply defined against a broad expanse of sunlit savanna.
Its head is raised and ears held prominently above the deeply folded skin of the neck, giving the youngster an attentive presence as it faces across the grass. Behind it, the landscape stretches towards a distant horizon where another rhinoceros moves through the softly blurred vegetation.
Above, the character of the scene changes dramatically. Towering blue-grey storm clouds gather across the sky, their dense forms interrupted by pale openings of late light. In the distance, a curtain of rain descends from the darkest cloud mass, creating a cool vertical veil against the warmer grassland below. Golden illumination continues to break through along the horizon, producing a striking contrast between approaching weather and the lingering warmth of the day.
Small against the scale of both landscape and sky, the young rhinoceros becomes the quiet centre of a scene poised between sunlight and rain.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) calf remains closely dependent upon its mother for several years, and this prolonged association provides far more than nourishment and physical protection. By accompanying her through a changing landscape, the youngster gradually learns how to respond to the environmental rhythms that shape life across African savannas and shrublands.
Rain can transform these environments remarkably quickly. New vegetation follows seasonal rainfall, temporary water may become available, and the distribution and quality of browse can change across a rhinoceros's range. Black rhinos are primarily browsers, feeding from woody plants, shrubs and other vegetation rather than relying predominantly upon grasses. A mother's established knowledge of her range therefore provides her calf with repeated exposure to productive feeding areas, water sources and sheltered resting places.
Young calves initially travel close beside their mothers. During uncertain conditions they can seek proximity to the much larger adult, while over time their confidence, stamina and familiarity with the landscape increase.
The calf is therefore learning something that cannot be acquired at birth, a mental map of home. Routes travelled repeatedly with its mother connect feeding grounds, water, shade and secure places to rest.
Long before independence, those journeys are building the geographical knowledge upon which the young rhinoceros will eventually depend, learning not merely how to survive within its habitat, but how to read a landscape that continually changes around it.

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
Rainfall can transform black rhinoceros habitat, renewing vegetation and replenishing the water systems on which entire landscapes depend. As browsers, black rhinos feed primarily on woody plants, shrubs, leaves and shoots rather than the grasses favoured by white rhinos. This allows them to occupy environments ranging from savannas and shrublands to remarkably arid regions, but prolonged drought can still reduce the quality and availability of browse and place additional pressure on females raising young.
Changing rainfall patterns are therefore becoming an increasingly important consideration in rhino conservation. Longer droughts can dry seasonal rivers, reduce vegetation and concentrate wildlife around remaining resources. Conservation managers may respond by protecting water systems, improving habitat resilience and, during severe conditions, providing water or moving animals from drought-affected areas. Maintaining sufficiently large and varied landscapes also gives rhinos greater opportunity to find suitable resources as environmental conditions change.
