PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
What’s Inside? captures a young chimpanzee absorbed in the discovery of an opened fig on the damp floor of a tropical African forest. Seated beside the moss-covered trunk of a mature tree, the youngster supports the rounded fruit carefully in one hand while extending a finger towards its exposed crimson interior.
Its attention is fixed entirely upon the fruit. Dark, rain-dampened hair frames the softly wrinkled face, while the lowered eyes and gently pursed mouth give the moment an unmistakable sense of concentration. Long, dexterous fingers curve naturally around the fig, contrasting with the intricate texture of its broken surface.
The chimpanzee sits with its legs comfortably folded beneath its body and broad feet resting against wet leaf litter. Around it, glossy foliage catches scattered droplets of water, while moss, vines and naturally weathered bark create distinct layers of texture across the surrounding forest.
Soft shafts of light penetrate the dense canopy, illuminating the youngster against the deeper greens and browns beyond. Rather than simply eating its find, the chimpanzee appears to examine it first: a small, quiet moment of touch, attention and discovery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) possesses hands capable of extraordinarily precise manipulation. Like humans, chimpanzees have five digits with nails rather than claws, and their hands combine powerful grasping ability with the fine control needed to handle, examine and process many different kinds of food.
Chimpanzee feeding is therefore highly tactile. Fruit can be held, turned, squeezed, opened or pulled apart while the fingers investigate its texture and edible portions. Other foods demand still more complicated handling. Depending upon the population and habitat, chimpanzees may strip leaves from stems, peel vegetation, crack hard foods, probe cavities and use carefully selected objects as tools.
Young chimpanzees must gradually master these abilities. Infants begin reaching for and manipulating objects while still heavily dependent upon their mothers, and their coordination becomes increasingly refined through repeated exploration, observation and practice. Objects may be touched, mouthed, rotated or pulled apart as youngsters learn how different materials respond to their actions.
This prolonged period of learning is especially important in a species whose feeding behaviour can be remarkably complex. A young chimpanzee does not simply inherit a fully developed repertoire of techniques; many useful skills are acquired while watching and interacting with experienced members of its community.
The probing finger in this scene therefore represents something fundamental to chimpanzee development, learning about the world quite literally through their hands.

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
When chimpanzees eat fruit, they also perform an important service for the forest. Many seeds are swallowed whole and carried through the digestive system before being deposited some distance from the parent tree. Research in Uganda's Kibale Forest found seeds in 98.5% of examined chimpanzee dung samples, with viable seeds from numerous plant species being dispersed through the forest. For several species, passage through a chimpanzee's digestive tract even increased the speed and probability of germination.
This makes chimpanzees important forest gardeners, particularly because their large bodies allow them to swallow and transport seeds too large for many smaller animals. By moving seeds to new locations, they help plants colonise suitable sites and contribute to the continual renewal and diversity of tropical forests. When large fruit-eating primates disappear, these ecological relationships can disappear with them; research in African forests has found that the loss of primate seed dispersers can alter seedling communities and impair forest regeneration. Protecting chimpanzees therefore also protects one of the natural processes through which their habitat recreates itself.
