PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Weightless presents a baby Common Hippopotamus suspended beneath the surface of clear, sunlit water, its body appearing unexpectedly buoyant and graceful within the aquatic landscape. Moving directly toward the viewer, the animal fills the frame with its broad muzzle, rounded head and compact barrel-shaped body.
Its short, powerful legs are drawn beneath the torso, the four-toed feet clearly visible as they hang forward through the water. Small ears project from either side of the head, while the eyes and nostrils occupy their characteristic elevated positions across the upper face. Fine hairs are visible around the muzzle and across the wet skin.
Above, the rippling surface creates shifting reflections across the hippo's back. Trails of tiny bubbles rise through the turquoise water, catching points of light around the animal, while sunlight penetrates from above and reveals the contours and folds of its submerged body.
Rounded stones and patches of submerged vegetation recede across the riverbed below. Removed from the apparent heaviness of the animal on land, the underwater setting reveals a very different impression, a body moving with quiet ease through its aquatic world.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius). Although exceptionally well adapted to life in water, hippopotamuses do not swim in quite the same manner as many other aquatic mammals. Their dense bodies are poorly buoyant, and underwater movement frequently involves contact with the riverbed rather than continuous propulsion through open water.
A submerged hippo may walk or run along the bottom, using its powerful limbs to propel itself forward. It can also push forcefully from the substrate and enter a brief gliding phase through the water before descending again. This repeated combination of bottom contact, propulsion and suspension can create the striking impression of an enormous animal becoming almost weightless.
Their anatomy complements this semi-aquatic existence. Eyes, ears and nostrils are positioned high on the head, allowing much of the body to remain submerged while the sensory organs reach the surface. The nostrils can close underwater, and hippos can remain submerged for several minutes before resurfacing to breathe.
Remarkably, surfacing for air can become largely automatic, allowing resting individuals to rise and breathe without becoming fully alert. The result is an animal occupying an unusual evolutionary middle ground, not a conventional swimmer, but a terrestrial mammal extraordinarily specialised for moving, resting and navigating beneath the water.

Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)
Despite their remarkable appearance underwater, hippos do not normally swim in the way that seals or other aquatic mammals do. Instead, they typically travel along the bottom of rivers and lakes, using their feet to push against the substrate. Water buoyancy partially supports their enormous body mass, allowing movements that would be impossible on land. Scientific analysis has recorded an underwater gait resembling a slow-motion gallop, including moments when all four feet leave the bottom, giving the animal an almost weightless appearance.
Their feet are also adapted to this semi-aquatic movement. The four toes can alter their spread, helping support and stabilise the animal on soft wet substrates while reducing resistance as the foot moves through water. These specialised movements illustrate why healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands are more than places for hippos to cool themselves: they are three-dimensional environments in which much of the species' daily life takes place. Protecting suitable aquatic habitat therefore preserves the physical environment to which the hippopotamus's distinctive locomotion is so closely adapted.
