PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Through the Frozen Giants captures a young polar bear cub making its way through an extraordinary landscape shaped entirely by snow and wind. Walking steadily towards the viewer, the small white cub passes beneath towering frozen formations that rise around it like great sculpted walls.
In the distance, sweeping shapes of compacted snow emerge from the open landscape, their curved profiles softened by pale winter light. Two immense formations frame the foreground, creating a natural passage through which the youngster appears, while ridges and hollows undulate across the snow beneath its paws.
Subtle shades of white, silver and icy blue reveal the contours of the frozen terrain, with gentle sunlight catching the cub's dense coat and the edges of the surrounding snow. Against the enormous forms of the Arctic landscape, the youngster appears wonderfully small, a solitary little figure progressing through a world carved on a scale far greater than its own.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus), learning to travel means mastering a landscape that rarely stays the same. Arctic sea ice is continually altered by wind, temperature and ocean movement, creating smooth expanses, deep snowdrifts, fractured surfaces and pressure ridges where moving sheets of ice push against one another.
Young cubs initially have neither the strength nor endurance of their mothers. Travelling across deep or uneven snow can therefore demand considerable energy from a small body, and youngsters gradually build the muscles, balance and stamina required for longer journeys. Their mother determines the route and pace, providing opportunities for rest while guiding them through difficult terrain.
These journeys are an essential part of a cub's education. Polar bears may eventually travel enormous distances across sea ice in search of feeding areas, and understanding this shifting environment is fundamental to survival. By accompanying their mother through different snow and ice conditions, growing cubs gain experience of the terrain that will one day become their own vast and constantly changing home.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
Travelling across the Arctic means crossing a surface that is never truly still. Sea ice is continually drifting, cracking, compressing and reforming under the influence of winds and ocean currents, so a Polar Bear must negotiate pressure ridges, broken ice, snowdrifts and open leads as it searches for prey and moves between important habitats. Even while a bear stands still, the ice beneath it may travel several kilometres in a day. Bears therefore respond not only to the landscape they can see, but also to ice movement, wind direction and scents carried across the frozen ocean.
Their bodies are superbly equipped for this mobile world. Polar Bear paws can reach around 30 centimetres across, spreading body weight over snow and ice, while fur around the feet provides insulation and additional contact with the surface. The footpads have a rough, papillated texture and their strong curved claws provide further purchase on slippery terrain. Yet travelling still carries an energetic cost, and faster-moving sea ice can force bears to walk farther simply to maintain their position within productive habitat. Research in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas found that increased ice drift caused adult females to increase their movement, raising estimated annual energy expenditure.
