PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Three Little Cygnets captures three young mute swan cygnets nestled together within an old wooden garden cart overflowing with wildflowers. Surrounded by daisies and tiny blossoms of yellow, pink, white and violet, the youngsters form a soft cluster of silvery-grey down amongst the abundant colour.
One cygnet rests prominently at the front, its rounded body settled deeply amongst the flowers and its dark bill gently lowered. A second sits close beside it, while the third rises slightly behind its companions, creating a small family grouping framed by the flowering garden.
Warm sunlight filters across the scene, illuminating the fine down around their heads and casting a soft golden glow over the weathered timber of the cart. The old wooden wheel and rough boards contrast with the delicate flowers and extraordinarily soft plumage of the young birds. Peaceful and whimsical, the artwork transforms the cart into a temporary cradle for three tiny companions resting together amongst the blooms.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor). For a young mute swan, early life is usually spent as part of a closely guarded family. A female may lay several eggs in a large nest constructed near the water, and when the cygnets hatch, the youngsters form a brood that generally travels, feeds and rests together.
Unlike species in which one parent undertakes almost all the care, mute swan cygnets benefit from the presence of both adults. The female performs most of the incubation, while the male, known as the cob, defends the nesting territory. Once the eggs hatch, both parents protect the cygnets, accompanying their family as the youngsters begin exploring the water and surrounding vegetation.
Sibling life also means growing alongside several youngsters at similar stages of development. Cygnets may feed and swim together, gather closely during periods of rest and respond to their parents when the family moves to another location. They remain associated with their parents for several months as their bodies grow and their first down gives way to juvenile feathers. Gradually, a tightly gathered little brood becomes a group of increasingly independent young swans preparing for life beyond the protection of their parents.

Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
Although Mute Swan cygnets can swim and feed themselves soon after hatching, they remain closely protected by both parents for several months. The female commonly stays nearest to the young while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory, and both adults may respond vigorously when potential predators approach. Young cygnets frequently travel together as a brood, resting, feeding and moving between sheltered areas under the supervision of their parents. This extended family period gives the youngsters time to grow rapidly while gradually developing the size, strength and plumage required for greater independence.
The transformation is considerable. Newly hatched cygnets are covered in soft down and initially unable to fly; over the following months this insulating coat is progressively replaced by juvenile plumage as the wings and flight muscles develop. Young Mute Swans generally become capable of flight at around four to five months of age, but may remain associated with their parents into autumn or winter before the family finally separates. Successful breeding therefore depends upon wetlands remaining suitable for an entire season, providing enough food, shelter and relatively undisturbed resting areas to carry a brood from hatching through to fledging.
