PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Woodland Doorway captures an Eastern Gray Squirrel peering from the circular entrance of a weathered wooden nest box fixed against the trunk of a mature tree. With its forepaws resting upon the lower edge of the opening, the squirrel leans cautiously into view, appearing poised between the security of its shelter and the woodland beyond.
Soft grey-brown fur covers the head and shoulders, warming to russet around the face and ears before meeting the pale cream of the throat and chest. Dark, rounded eyes reflect the surrounding light, while fine whiskers frame the compact muzzle. Behind the animal, the characteristic bushy tail rises into the shadowed interior, its coarse guard hairs creating a darker halo around the body.
The nest box has been rendered with the character of long exposure to the elements. Rough timber grain, aged edges, small iron fastenings and a steeply pitched roof give it the appearance of a miniature woodland cottage. Moss and lichen spread across the adjoining bark, while softly focused leaves and pale blossoms surround the structure. Warm filtered light completes the scene, transforming the simple entrance into a quiet threshold between shelter and forest.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). For an Eastern Gray Squirrel, a hole in a tree can be valuable woodland real estate. Natural cavities provide enclosed shelters protected from much of the wind and rain outside, and squirrels readily use suitable hollows for sleeping, raising young and escaping severe weather. Where natural cavities are scarce, appropriately designed nest boxes can provide a similar enclosed space.
Eastern Gray Squirrels also construct exposed nests known as dreys. Usually positioned among sturdy branches, these roughly spherical structures are assembled from twigs and lined with softer materials such as leaves, shredded bark and moss. Individual squirrels may maintain access to several shelters rather than relying upon a single permanent home.
Tree cavities, however, offer advantages during particularly cold conditions. Their solid walls provide greater insulation than an exposed drey, and squirrels may retreat into them during winter weather. Females can also use secure cavities as maternal dens while their young are small and vulnerable.
Squirrels do not necessarily excavate these chambers themselves. Instead, they take advantage of existing hollows created by decay, broken limbs or the former activity of cavity-making animals. Their dependence upon such spaces illustrates why mature and ageing trees remain ecologically important even when damaged or partly hollow.
A tree that appears imperfect to human eyes can therefore contain some of the most valuable accommodation in the forest.

Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Eastern Grey Squirrels need secure places to rest, shelter from severe weather and raise their young. They construct leafy nests, known as dreys, high in tree branches, but natural tree cavities provide particularly valuable protection. Females may use hollows as maternity dens, while squirrels can also retreat into cavities during cold or stormy weather. Suitable hollows are most commonly associated with larger, older trees, meaning that the structure and age of a woodland can be just as important to wildlife as the number of trees it contains.
Natural cavities take many years to develop through processes such as decay, broken branches and woodpecker excavation. Where old or damaged trees are removed, these sheltered spaces can become scarce. Artificial nest boxes can sometimes provide supplementary shelter, but they do not reproduce the many ecological functions of mature cavity-bearing trees. Retaining older trees, deadwood where it can safely remain, and a succession of younger trees that will eventually develop hollows helps ensure that woodland continues providing nesting opportunities for squirrels and numerous other cavity-dependent animals.
