PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Strawberry Thief captures a young Eastern Grey Squirrel investigating an irresistible discovery in a quiet garden. Standing upright beside a weathered terracotta pot, the youngster rests its tiny forepaws against the rim while peering towards a cascade of ripening strawberries.
Its compact body is rendered in finely layered grey and warm brown fur, with a creamy underside and a full, softly curled tail sweeping behind it across the wooden table. Bright dark eyes and upright ears give the squirrel an alert, inquisitive expression, as though it has paused for only a moment before deciding whether to venture closer.
Beside it, the strawberry plant spills generously over the aged pot. White blossoms, tightly developing fruits, pale green berries and fully ripened red strawberries appear together among dense serrated leaves, presenting several stages of the plant's fruiting cycle within the same intimate scene.
The rough timber tabletop and mineral-stained terracotta introduce gentle rustic textures, while the surrounding garden dissolves into soft greens and scattered pink flowers. Warm natural light settles across the squirrel and fruit, turning a small act of garden curiosity into a playful portrait of youthful discovery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) undergoes an important dietary transition during its first months of life. Newborn squirrels depend entirely upon their mother's milk, but as they develop they gradually begin sampling solid foods before eventually becoming fully independent foragers.
Young squirrels must learn to manipulate food as well as locate it. Their remarkably dexterous forepaws allow them to hold and rotate objects while the incisors investigate shells, husks, stems and other edible material. With experience, youngsters become increasingly efficient at recognising foods and handling the harder nuts and seeds that will eventually form an important part of their diet.
Eastern Grey Squirrels are adaptable omnivorous foragers, although much of their diet consists of plant material. Acorns and other tree seeds are especially important, supplemented seasonally by buds, flowers, fungi and fruits. Where squirrels live near gardens and cultivated landscapes, soft fruits can provide another readily discovered food source.
This flexibility becomes increasingly important as the seasons change. Rather than relying upon one type of food throughout the year, squirrels continually respond to what their environment provides.
For a youngster beginning to explore independently, therefore, an unfamiliar fruit represents more than a potential meal. Investigating, touching, smelling and eventually tasting different foods are all part of acquiring the practical knowledge needed to forage successfully on its own.

Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Eastern Grey Squirrels are remarkably adaptable foragers. Although tree seeds and nuts such as acorns, hickory nuts and beechnuts form an important part of their natural diet, they also exploit buds, flowers, fungi, berries and fleshy fruits as these become seasonally available. That flexibility extends readily into human landscapes: gardens and orchards can provide strawberries, apples and other cultivated foods, while parks and residential areas often contain mature trees that supply both natural food and shelter.
This ability to use human-modified environments has helped Eastern Grey Squirrels become particularly successful inhabitants of towns and suburbs. Recent studies find them strongly associated with urban green spaces, although trees remain fundamental: squirrel abundance and habitat use are closely related to tree density, canopy cover and the presence of oaks. Gardens can therefore form part of a much larger network of urban wildlife habitat when they connect with parks, street trees and wooded areas. Their success illustrates an important conservation principle, even highly adaptable wildlife still benefits from green spaces that retain the structural features of natural habitat.
