PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Snow Nest captures a young polar bear cub curled tightly inside a sheltered hollow in the Arctic snow. Tucked into the curved walls of its tiny retreat, the sleeping cub folds its body into a compact circle, resting its head against its paws as fine crystals of snow cling to its thick white coat.
Around the youngster, layers of sculpted snow rise into a natural enclosure, shielding its small body while leaving the pale Arctic landscape visible beyond. Soft winter sunlight catches the upper ridges of the hollow, revealing delicate textures where loose powder gives way to firmer, wind-shaped snow. Subtle shadows deepen towards the sleeping cub, creating a quiet sense of shelter within the immense open landscape.
Almost disappearing amongst the surrounding whites, the little bear seems perfectly tucked into its frozen resting place, a peaceful moment of sleep hidden within a small pocket of the Arctic.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) spend considerable time resting as they accompany their mothers across the Arctic. Although maternity dens are specially constructed by pregnant females for giving birth and protecting newborn cubs, polar bears outside this period may also use the snow in much simpler ways when they need shelter or rest.
A bear can settle into a natural depression or scrape out a shallow resting hollow, using surrounding snow to provide some protection from wind. Curling the body also reduces the amount of surface area exposed to cold air, while the bear's remarkable insulation helps retain precious body heat. For a young cub, resting close to its mother remains especially important after periods of travel and activity.
Polar bear fur contributes significantly to this protection. Beneath the visible outer guard hairs lies a dense insulating undercoat, while body fat provides an additional barrier against heat loss. Together with simple behaviours such as seeking shelter and curling tightly while resting, these adaptations allow growing cubs to sleep in conditions that would be extraordinarily challenging for most young mammals.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
For a Polar Bear cub, the first home is hidden almost completely from the outside world. Pregnant females excavate maternity dens within deep snowdrifts, where cubs are typically born during early winter weighing only around half a kilogram. Blind, lightly furred and incapable of surviving Arctic conditions independently, they rely upon the den's insulated environment and their mother's body heat. Temperatures inside can remain dramatically warmer than the air outside, while the mother nurses her cubs on exceptionally rich milk. By spring, those tiny newborns may have increased their body mass roughly twentyfold and become strong enough to begin encountering the world beyond the den.
Protecting these hidden nurseries has become an important conservation challenge. Maternal dens can be extremely difficult to detect beneath the snow, yet disturbance from vehicles, aircraft and expanding industrial activity can occur during one of the most vulnerable periods in the Polar Bear life cycle. Recent research combining satellite collars with remote cameras is giving scientists an unusually detailed view of den emergence. In Svalbard, monitored families remained around their dens for an average of 12 days after first emerging, allowing cubs time to explore, strengthen their legs and acclimatise before travelling onwards. Better detection of occupied dens and appropriate disturbance-free areas can therefore protect an extraordinarily important few months in the life of each new generation.
