PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Orchard Siesta captures a young Common Raccoon sleeping peacefully in a fabric hammock suspended between two mature trees. Curled deeply into the centre of the softly sagging cloth, the youngster rests its head against the folded edge, eyes closed and body completely relaxed. One forepaw lies beside its muzzle while the other hangs freely below the hammock, its long dark claws silhouetted against the sunlit woodland floor.
Warm golden light pours through the trees from behind, catching the outer edges of the raccoon's dense grey-brown coat and illuminating the pale markings surrounding its distinctive dark facial mask. The hammock stretches diagonally upwards towards rough-barked trunks on either side, where gathered fabric is securely bound around the trees.
Scattered apples lie among grasses, fallen leaves and small woodland plants below, while further fruit remains suspended among the softly focused foliage overhead. Additional apples appear as muted spots of red within the glowing background. The combination of dappled woodland, ripe fruit and late-afternoon light creates a tranquil seasonal setting around the sleeping youngster, transforming a simple moment of rest into a warm portrait of complete repose.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor) is primarily nocturnal, and learning when to rest and when to become active forms part of a youngster's gradual transition into the adult way of life. Newborn kits initially spend their lives inside the maternal den, where periods of sleeping and nursing dominate their earliest development. As they grow and begin following their mother outside, their activity becomes increasingly associated with the hours between dusk and dawn.
During daylight, wild raccoons commonly retreat to protected resting sites. Tree cavities are particularly valuable, but individuals may also use hollow logs, dense vegetation, rock crevices and other secluded refuges. A raccoon does not necessarily depend upon a single resting place; several suitable sites may be used as it moves through its home range.
For young raccoons, remaining close to their mother during this period provides both protection and experience. Once mobile, kits accompany her on nocturnal excursions, learning where food, water and secure refuges can be found before returning to shelter to rest.
This pattern reflects the remarkable behavioural flexibility for which raccoons are known. Although most activity occurs at night, their schedules are not governed by darkness alone. Season, temperature, food availability and human disturbance can all influence when an individual emerges.
By the time youngsters approach independence, the simple rhythm of sleeping and following their mother has developed into something far more sophisticated: an ability to organise periods of travel, feeding and rest around the changing opportunities and risks of their environment.

Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Raccoons are remarkably flexible omnivores, changing what they eat as different foods become available throughout the year. In many parts of their range, summer and early autumn bring an abundance of soft fruits, including berries, wild grapes, cherries, persimmons and apples. As autumn advances, nuts and seeds become increasingly important, particularly energy-rich acorns. Rather than depending upon a single food source, raccoons track these changing seasonal opportunities across woodland, wetland and forest-edge habitats.
This autumn abundance has particular importance in colder parts of their range. Raccoons do not truly hibernate, but they may remain inside sheltered dens for days or even weeks during severe winter weather, relying partly upon stored body fat until conditions improve. Studies of wild raccoons have recorded substantial increases in body mass between summer and early winter as fat reserves accumulate. Productive woodlands containing fruiting shrubs and mature nut-bearing trees can therefore provide both the varied foods and energy reserves that help raccoons cope with seasonal scarcity.
