PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Living Fortress follows an Ankylosaurus as it moves through the shallows of an ancient wetland, its immense armoured body illuminated by warm light filtering between the trees. One forefoot reaches into the water, disturbing the glassy surface and sending delicate ripples outward beneath its weight.
Across the animal's broad back, tightly arranged plates and rounded osteoderms form an irregular mosaic of natural armour. Larger projections rise along the flanks and shoulders, while smaller scales fill the spaces between them, creating a rugged surface that contrasts with the soft vegetation surrounding the animal. Its low head extends forward above the water, balanced at the opposite end by a heavy tail disappearing behind its body.
Ferns and low waterside plants frame the foreground, while scattered flowers and partially submerged vegetation break the reflections across the shallow pool. Beyond, slender trunks disappear into a softly illuminated forest.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Ankylosaurus (Ankylosaurus magniventris) lived during the very end of the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 68–66 million years ago, making it one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to inhabit North America before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Its fossils have been discovered in geological formations of the western United States and Canada, including rocks deposited when this region contained broad floodplains, river systems, forests and coastal environments.
Ankylosaurus belonged to a remarkable lineage of heavily armoured herbivorous dinosaurs. Embedded within its skin were bony structures called osteoderms, which formed extensive protection across the neck, back and sides. Even parts of the skull were reinforced. At the opposite end of the body was its famous tail club, constructed from enlarged osteoderms supported by specialised tail vertebrae. Biomechanical research suggests that large individuals could have delivered extremely powerful blows with this structure.
Despite its formidable appearance, Ankylosaurus was a plant-eater. Its broad muzzle and relatively small teeth were suited to cropping vegetation rather than pursuing prey, and its low-slung body placed its head conveniently among plants growing close to the ground.
It shared the final chapter of the Cretaceous with animals including Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. Then, approximately 66 million years ago, the asteroid-driven mass extinction brought the age of the non-avian dinosaurs, and the long evolutionary history of creatures such as Ankylosaurus, to an abrupt end.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
