PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Little Shore captures a young sea otter sitting at the margin of a sheltered rocky cove, where a narrow ribbon of water reaches across the wet sand. Its compact body rests close to the shoreline, dark damp fur contrasting with the paler colouring of its rounded face as it looks outward from the beach.
Smooth pebbles, weathered driftwood and broad strands of kelp gather along the shore, surrounding the small figure with the textures of the intertidal zone. A thin line of foam curves towards its forepaws before dissolving across the reflective sand. Beyond, turquoise water fills the cove, enclosed on either side by rugged rock formations that soften into the distance.
Gentle light catches the otter's whiskers and the fine fur around its head while subdued reflections move across the shallows. The low viewpoint places the animal within the scale of its coastal surroundings, creating an intimate portrait of a young marine mammal poised between the shelter of the shore and the open water beyond.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) is unusual among marine mammals because it relies on exceptionally dense fur rather than a thick layer of blubber for insulation. Its coat contains an extraordinary concentration of hairs that trap air close to the skin, helping protect the animal from the cold waters of the North Pacific. Maintaining this insulating layer requires frequent and meticulous grooming.
Sea otter pups begin life highly dependent upon their mothers. Their buoyant natal coat traps so much air that very young pups float readily at the surface and initially have difficulty diving. Mothers carry, groom and nurse their offspring and may leave them floating while they dive beneath the surface to forage. As pups develop, their juvenile coat changes and they gradually acquire the swimming, diving and foraging abilities necessary for independence.
Coastal shallows, rocky shorelines and kelp-dominated habitats provide important feeding and resting environments for the species. Here, young otters begin learning how to negotiate a world divided between surface and seabed, eventually becoming accomplished marine foragers capable of diving for shellfish and other benthic prey.

Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris)
Sea Otters are one of the best-known examples of a keystone predator, an animal whose influence on its ecosystem can be far greater than its numbers might suggest. In many rocky coastal ecosystems, Sea Otters prey heavily upon sea urchins, which graze on kelp. Where otters keep urchin populations under control, kelp can flourish; where otters disappear, large numbers of urchins can strip away extensive areas of kelp and create sparsely vegetated “urchin barrens.” Long-term studies have demonstrated this powerful relationship between otter abundance, urchin grazing and the structure of kelp forests.
The resulting kelp forests support far more than the otters themselves. Their towering underwater vegetation provides feeding grounds, shelter and nursery habitat for numerous fishes and invertebrates, while also changing water movement, light and other conditions within the coastal ecosystem. The relationship is not identical everywhere, recent research shows that the strength of the otter–urchin–kelp cascade varies between regions, but restoring Sea Otters can help restore the ecological processes that allow complex coastal communities to thrive. Protecting the predator can therefore help protect an entire underwater forest.
