PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Little Fisher captures a young brown bear cub standing cautiously at the edge of a shallow mountain river. Its small paws rest amongst smooth, water-worn stones as it leans forward, studying the clear water with quiet concentration.
Beneath the surface, several salmon move through the shallows, their slender forms visible amongst the submerged rocks. Gentle ripples spread across the water beside the cub, while the muted landscape of stones, distant vegetation and mist-softened mountains creates a calm wilderness setting.
The cub's thick brown coat appears soft and slightly tousled, contrasting with the wet sheen of the river stones beneath its feet. With its head lowered and attention fixed firmly on the water, the youngster seems fascinated by the movement below. The scene captures a small moment of discovery at the river's edge, where a young bear encounters a world of flowing water, slippery stones and passing fish that it is only beginning to understand.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) cub is not born knowing how to catch a salmon. During its early life, many of the skills it will eventually need are learned while accompanying and observing its mother. Cubs generally remain with her for around two to three years, giving them an unusually long period in which to learn how to navigate their environment and locate seasonal foods.
For populations with access to salmon runs, rivers can become important seasonal feeding grounds. Young cubs may watch their mother pursue fish, investigate the shallows themselves and gradually develop the coordination and timing required to make successful attempts. Fishing is challenging: salmon are fast, water distorts their apparent position, and slippery riverbeds add another difficulty for an inexperienced youngster.
A cub's education extends far beyond fishing. Following its mother helps it learn where different foods can be found, how landscapes change with the seasons and which places may present danger. These experiences gradually build the knowledge needed for independence. What begins as curiosity beside a stream can therefore form part of a much larger childhood spent learning how to become a bear.

Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)
Where salmon runs overlap with brown bear habitat, the relationship between bear, fish and forest creates an extraordinary ecological connection between ocean and land. Salmon accumulate marine nutrients while growing at sea before returning to freshwater to spawn. Bears catch these fish in rivers and streams and frequently carry them onto the banks to feed, moving salmon-derived nutrients away from the water and into the surrounding terrestrial ecosystem.
Those nutrients can become incorporated into soils and vegetation. Research on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula estimated that 15.5–17.8% of the nitrogen in spruce foliage within 500 metres of salmon streams originated from salmon, with bears responsible for distributing most of that marine-derived nitrogen. Protecting healthy salmon runs therefore supports far more than the bears that depend upon them: the connection between fish, predators and forests helps link entire aquatic and terrestrial food webs.
