PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Lily-Pad Bed captures a tiny North American River Otter curled peacefully asleep upon an extraordinary floating bed of overlapping water-lily leaves. Nestled at the centre of the broad green pads, the young pup tucks its paws beneath its body while its long tail curves gently around its side, its dark brown coat contrasting beautifully against the rain-speckled foliage.
Around the sleeping otter, still water stretches into a quiet wetland framed by towering trees and trailing vegetation. White water-lily flowers rise among the surrounding leaves, while a dragonfly rests delicately upon a slender stem nearby. Morning mist hangs low across the distant water, softening the forest beyond and catching the warm light filtering between the trees.
The oversized natural bed lends the scene its touch of gentle impossibility: a secret resting place seemingly assembled by the wetland itself for one very small traveller who has fallen asleep upon the water.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis) is born remarkably dependent on its mother. Litters commonly contain two or three pups, although numbers can vary, with the young arriving blind, toothless and covered in fine fur. Their eyes generally remain closed for several weeks, and during this early period they stay protected within a secluded natal den while their mother provides warmth, milk and almost constant care.
As the pups develop, their world gradually expands beyond the den. Although river otters are superbly adapted to aquatic life, swimming is not simply an effortless instinct from birth. Youngsters must become comfortable in the water and develop the coordination needed to swim and dive effectively, encouraged and supervised by their mother as they learn.
Play becomes an important part of this development. Wrestling, chasing, sliding and investigating unfamiliar objects help young otters refine the agility and problem-solving abilities they will eventually use while travelling and hunting. For several months, the family remains closely associated, allowing the pups time to learn the complex skills required for an increasingly independent life along North America's waterways.

North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis)
North American River Otter pups begin life surprisingly far removed from the confident swimmers they will become. They are born in sheltered dens along riverbanks, lakeshores and wetlands, usually occupying cavities or burrows created by other animals rather than excavating elaborate dens themselves. Newborn pups are blind, lightly mobile and completely dependent upon their mother. Their eyes open after several weeks, but swimming is a learned skill rather than an ability present from birth. Mothers gradually introduce their pups to the water, and youngsters must develop the coordination, strength and confidence needed for an increasingly aquatic life.
That transition makes protected wetland margins particularly important. River Otters need more than open water: vegetated banks, marshes, fallen timber, root systems and secluded denning or resting sites provide shelter close to productive feeding areas. Wetlands also support the fish, crayfish, amphibians and other aquatic animals upon which otters feed. Because contaminants can accumulate through aquatic food webs, otters can also provide scientists with useful information about the condition of freshwater ecosystems. Protecting an otter family therefore means conserving the connected system of clean water, abundant prey and structurally complex shoreline surrounding it.
