PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Lavender Bed captures a young Red Fox curled tightly among flowering lavender as the final warmth of evening settles across the landscape. Nestled directly against the earth, the little fox has drawn its body inward and swept its luxuriant tail around itself, resting its muzzle against the soft fur as though tucked beneath a russet blanket.
Its triangular ears remain upright despite the relaxed posture, while dark, watchful eyes peer quietly above the curve of the tail. Fine juvenile fur softens the contours of the body, transitioning from warm copper across the head and back to deeper brown along the legs and tail.
Lavender rises densely around the resting fox, its slender stems and violet flower spikes creating a sheltered pocket within the planting. Some blooms fall softly out of focus in the foreground while others frame the animal closely, giving the scene an intimate, hidden quality.
Behind them, the setting sun glows through a haze of purple and green, tracing a delicate rim of gold around the fox's ears and coat. The contrast of violet flowers, russet fur and amber evening light transforms a simple resting posture into a wonderfully peaceful portrait of warmth and seclusion.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) possesses one of the most recognisable tails in the mammalian world. Often called a brush, the long, densely furred tail can account for more than a third of the animal's total length and performs several important functions throughout a fox's life.
When resting in cold conditions, a fox commonly curls its body tightly and draws the tail around its feet and face. The dense fur provides an additional layer of insulation over areas through which heat can readily be lost, while the compact posture reduces the amount of body surface exposed to cold air. This simple behaviour helps the animal conserve warmth without expending additional energy.
The tail is equally useful when the fox is moving. During rapid turns, leaps and changes of direction, it contributes to balance and body control. It also plays a role in visual communication, with posture and movement helping convey information during encounters with other foxes.
Young foxes, known as cubs or kits, are born with comparatively short, soft coats, but their tails become increasingly full as they develop towards their adult proportions.
For a resting fox, therefore, that spectacular brush is far more than an ornamental feature, it can serve as counterbalance, signalling device and, when the evening turns cold, a remarkably effective built-in blanket.

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
As summer progresses, a Red Fox cub's world expands dramatically. After spending its earliest weeks centred upon the den, it begins travelling farther through the surrounding territory, first on short excursions and eventually exploring much of its parents' home range. By around 10 weeks, cubs may venture short distances without an accompanying adult, and by approximately 12 weeks they can explore more independently. These months allow youngsters to become familiar with the places that provide shelter, food and safe resting sites before they must eventually navigate the landscape for themselves.
For many young foxes, this growing independence ultimately leads to dispersal. Subadults commonly leave their natal territory during autumn, although timing and distance vary considerably between individuals and environments. Males generally disperse more frequently and farther than females, while some daughters may remain within or near their family territory. Dispersal is an important part of the Red Fox life cycle, it allows young animals to establish territories of their own, find future mates and maintain movement between populations. Modern tracking studies show that dispersing foxes alternate between directed travel and exploratory movements as they investigate unfamiliar landscapes.
