PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Gardener's Hat captures a tiny domestic rabbit curled asleep within the hollow of a weathered straw hat. Tucked securely into the woven crown, the young rabbit draws its body into a compact curve, its head resting against the brim and its small forepaws concealed beneath the softness of its coat.
Warm brown and tawny fur covers the rounded body, becoming paler along the underside and beneath the chin. The rabbit's eyes are gently closed, while its fine whiskers lie against the muzzle and two small ears rest together above its head. Individual strands of fur catch the sunlight, contrasting with the coarse, interwoven fibres of the ageing hat.
The surrounding garden is rendered in soft golden light. White daisies rise beyond the brim, while terracotta pots, fresh leaves and scattered vegetation dissolve gradually into the sunlit background. Frayed fibres around the hat's edge and a worn leather band reinforce its well-used character. Bathed in the warmth of late-afternoon light, the unlikely resting place becomes an intimate shelter, framing the sleeping rabbit within the familiar textures of a quiet garden.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Domestic Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus)
Domestic rabbits begin life very differently from many of the young animals commonly associated with farms and households. Their newborns, known as kits, are altricial: they are born almost hairless, with closed eyes and ears, and are entirely dependent upon the warmth and protection of the nest. Over the following days, however, development proceeds rapidly as fur grows across the body and the senses gradually awaken.
Before giving birth, a doe prepares a nest using available bedding material and fur plucked from her own chest and abdomen. The resulting insulated chamber helps maintain the temperature required by the vulnerable litter. Unlike many mammalian mothers, she does not remain continuously with her young. Instead, rabbit does typically visit the nest only briefly to nurse, often once or twice within a 24-hour period.
This apparently distant behaviour has deep evolutionary origins. European wild rabbits, from which domestic rabbits descend, conceal their young within protected underground nest chambers. Spending relatively little time at the nest may reduce attention from predators while the kits remain hidden.
At roughly ten days their eyes begin to open, and during the following weeks they become increasingly mobile and inquisitive. The tiny, nest-dependent newborn is therefore transformed remarkably quickly into the alert, active young rabbit characteristic of the species.

We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
