PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Frozen Bubble captures a young polar bear cub investigating a tiny, perfectly rounded bubble resting upon the frozen surface of the Arctic ice. Leaning forward with its head lowered, the cub studies the transparent sphere at close range, its dark eyes and black nose focused on the curious object beneath its paws.
The bubble appears almost weightless against the scratched blue-grey ice, catching points of pale winter light within its glass-like surface. Around it, delicate fractures and frozen lines spread beneath the cub's broad paws, while banks of powdery snow frame the exposed patch of ice. Beyond, the frozen landscape dissolves into soft whites and blues beneath a clear Arctic sky.
The simplicity of the scene draws attention to the contrast between the small, inquisitive cub and its even smaller discovery. For one quiet moment, the immense frozen landscape has been reduced to a single object on the ice and the youngster curious enough to stop and investigate it.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus), for a young polar bear curiosity and play are important parts of learning how to move through an Arctic world dominated by snow, ice and water. Cubs investigate their surroundings with their noses, mouths and paws, while playful chasing, wrestling and exploration help develop coordination, strength and confidence.
The paws themselves are particularly important. Polar bears have large feet that spread their weight across snow and provide propulsion while swimming. The soles are partly covered with fur, while textured pads and strong claws provide additional grip on slippery surfaces. For a growing cub, learning to place and control those paws across uneven snow and ice is part of becoming an accomplished Arctic traveller.
Play with siblings can also rehearse movements that will later have practical value. Pouncing, pawing, biting and wrestling strengthen muscles and refine reactions, while exploration introduces youngsters to the changing textures and conditions around them. What appears to be simple childhood curiosity is therefore also preparation for an exceptionally demanding adult environment.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
Polar Bears are powerful swimmers, capable of crossing substantial stretches of open water between ice and land. Yet swimming is considerably more demanding than travelling across sea ice. Modelling suggests that moving a given distance through water may require almost five times as much energy as walking, because a swimming bear must propel itself continuously while simultaneously losing heat to the surrounding Arctic water. Adults carrying substantial fat reserves can undertake remarkable crossings, but the energetic cost increases as distances grow and opportunities to stop and rest disappear.
For young cubs, open water presents an even greater challenge. Their smaller bodies and limited insulating fat make them particularly susceptible to heat loss, and females accompanied by cubs-of-the-year spend less time swimming than other adult females. Research suggests that very young cubs are not physiologically suited to prolonged swims, making closely spaced sea ice especially important to families. As climate change creates larger expanses of open water, the issue is therefore not simply how much ice remains, but how far bears must swim between safe platforms.
