PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Forgotten Boot captures a tiny red fox kit fast asleep in the most unexpected of resting places. Curled inside a weathered leather work boot, the young fox has tucked its head against the softened tongue, its russet fur and pale muzzle emerging above worn laces and scuffed brown leather. The oversized boot becomes an accidental cradle, its battered surface contrasting with the softness of the sleeping kit.
Around this unlikely bed, an old timber step opens onto a cottage garden filled with lavender, climbing pink roses and tall foxgloves. A metal watering can and terracotta pots sit quietly amongst the flowers, while warm sunlight filters through the garden beyond. Every scratch, crease and patch of earth on the abandoned boot adds to the sense that it has simply been left behind after a day's work. At its centre, the sleeping kit transforms an ordinary garden object into a small and wonderfully unexpected sanctuary.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) begins life remarkably dependent on the security of its den. Kits are born after a gestation of around seven to eight weeks, usually in an underground earth chosen for shelter and protection. At birth they are tiny, blind and deaf, with dark, soft coats that bear little resemblance to the rich russet colouring associated with adult foxes. Their eyes generally begin opening at around two weeks of age, while their senses, coordination and curiosity develop rapidly over the weeks that follow.
For roughly the first month, the den forms the centre of a kit's world. As the youngsters become stronger, they begin venturing outside, initially remaining close to its entrance before gradually exploring farther afield. Play becomes an important part of their development, helping young foxes practise stalking, pouncing, chasing and social behaviour. By watching adults and interacting with their littermates, the kits steadily acquire many of the skills they will eventually need to forage and survive independently.

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
Red Fox cubs begin life remarkably helpless. Born blind and unable to regulate their body temperature effectively, they spend their earliest weeks protected within a natal den, relying heavily upon their mother for warmth and milk. Their eyes open at roughly 9–14 days, but they generally remain underground until around four or five weeks old. Once they begin emerging, the small world immediately surrounding the den becomes their first outdoor classroom, a comparatively safe place to investigate unfamiliar objects, play with siblings and gradually develop the coordination and confidence needed for life beyond it.
Raising those cubs can also be a family effort. The vixen provides the intensive care of the newborn litter, while the male commonly contributes food and helps protect the family. Red Fox social systems are surprisingly flexible, and in some populations non-breeding females, often older daughters that have remained within their natal territory, may also help provision, groom or protect younger cubs. As the youngsters grow, solid food increasingly replaces milk and their explorations extend farther from the den, beginning the long transition from dependent cub to independent hunter.
