PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Forest Nap captures a young American Black Bear sleeping peacefully upon a moss-covered forest floor. Curled loosely on its side, the cub rests its muzzle against one forepaw while the other lies extended beneath its chest. Its rounded ears remain visible above the dense dark coat, and one small hind paw emerges from beneath its body, revealing the soft pads of the foot.
Around the sleeping cub, the woodland floor forms a natural bed of moss, delicate ferns and low-growing vegetation. Small white, yellow and violet flowers rise through the greenery, their scattered arrangement surrounding the dark form of the bear without obscuring it. Mature tree trunks frame the clearing, while layers of vegetation gradually soften into the distance.
Warm sunlight filters through the canopy from behind, catching the outer edges of the cub's fur and illuminating patches of moss and flowers across the clearing. The contrast between the bear's deep coat and the fresh greens of the woodland gives the composition a gentle stillness, preserving a fleeting interval of sleep within the shelter of the forest.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus). For a young American Black Bear, the months following emergence from the winter den are a period of rapid growth, learning and almost continuous discovery. Cubs travel with their mother as she searches for food, encountering new terrain and gradually developing the climbing, foraging and navigational skills upon which they will eventually depend. Between these periods of activity, however, young bears also spend considerable time resting.
Rest is particularly important during early development. Bear cubs are born extremely small relative to their mother's size and undergo remarkable physical growth during their first year. After leaving the den, their expanding world requires increasing levels of movement and coordination, from following their mother across uneven ground to climbing trees and investigating potential foods.
Black bears do not restrict sleep to the security of a den. Depending upon circumstances, they may rest on the ground, among dense vegetation, beneath trees or in other sheltered places. Young cubs may also climb trees to rest, particularly when their mother is feeding nearby or when they have been directed upward for safety.
These quiet intervals form an easily overlooked part of a cub's development. The energetic exploration associated with young animals is balanced by periods of inactivity, allowing a growing bear to conserve energy before once again following its mother through the forest.

American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)
A black bear's survival is closely tied to the changing food supply of the seasons. Emerging vegetation, grasses and other tender plants become important during spring, while summer brings a greater variety of fruits, berries and insects. During autumn, energy-rich foods such as nuts can become especially valuable as bears build the fat reserves that will sustain them through months of winter denning. The availability and timing of these natural foods can strongly influence body condition and reproductive success.
Conserving productive bear habitat therefore means maintaining a diverse landscape rather than a single type of forest. Woodlands, forest openings, wetlands, berry-producing shrubs and mature nut-bearing trees can each provide resources at different times of year. Protecting this seasonal variety gives bears the flexibility to move between food sources as conditions change and helps reduce the likelihood that they will seek concentrated human foods when natural resources become scarce.
