PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The First Snowfall captures a young Highland calf standing quietly amongst snow-covered grasses as winter settles across the landscape. With its head raised towards the falling flakes, the calf's small face emerges from a wonderfully tousled coat of warm russet hair, tiny crystals of snow gathering across its forehead, ears and back.
A cloud of breath drifts from its muzzle into the cold air, illuminated by low golden sunlight filtering through the trees behind. Around the calf, delicate seed heads bow beneath caps of fresh snow while a timber fence disappears softly into the wintry background. Warm light catches the edges of the calf's shaggy coat, setting its rich copper tones against the cool whites and muted greys of the surrounding field. Falling snow suspended throughout the scene completes a quiet portrait of a small Highland calf standing at the centre of winter's gentle transformation.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Highland cattle (Bos taurus) calves are born into one of the world's most recognisably shaggy cattle breeds. Although newborns are smaller and softer-coated than the adults they will become, they already possess an important inheritance for life in exposed conditions. As they grow, Highland cattle develop their characteristic double coat: a soft, insulating undercoat protected by a longer, coarse outer layer that helps shed rain and snow.
Calves normally rise and attempt to stand soon after birth, an essential milestone that allows them to reach their mother's milk and begin following her. During their first months, maternal protection remains important, while grazing and rumination gradually become a larger part of their daily lives alongside nursing.
Their famous horns are not present as the sweeping structures seen in adults. Horn growth develops progressively from small horn buds as the calf matures. Together with increasing body size, a deepening coat and growing independence, these changes gradually transform the soft, tousled youngster into the remarkably hardy Highland animal adapted to life outdoors through challenging weather.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. Production and dispatch times may vary depending on the print format, size and finishing requirements selected. Please refer to the individual product page for any specific production timeframes.
We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
