PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The First Reach captures a young Bornean Orangutan negotiating the interwoven branches of a tropical rainforest. Balanced upon a broad, moss-covered limb, the youngster stretches both arms widely between neighbouring supports, gripping a slender branch overhead with one hand while reaching towards the rising trunk beside it with the other. One foot remains planted firmly against the bark, creating a remarkable display of balance and flexibility.
Soft reddish-brown hair covers the orangutan's slender body and elongated limbs, becoming finer around the face and crown. Its dark hands and feet contrast against the vivid green moss beneath them, while its attentive gaze is directed towards the route ahead.
Dense rainforest vegetation surrounds the youngster on every side. Broad leaves overlap through the middle distance and tall trunks dissolve gradually into the softly illuminated background, creating a layered impression of the forest's vertical structure. Diffused light filters through the canopy from above, gently illuminating the orangutan's copper-coloured coat.
Rather than presenting the youngster at rest, the composition captures a moment of decision: four limbs, several possible supports and a young animal learning how to move confidently through a world built almost entirely above the ground.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) has one of the longest childhoods of any non-human mammal. For the first months of life, an infant remains in almost continuous physical contact with its mother, clinging to her hair as she travels and feeds. Yet during these journeys, the youngster is already being introduced to one of its greatest future challenges: learning how to move independently through the rainforest canopy.
Orangutan locomotion is remarkably complex. Rather than simply climbing from branch to branch, individuals must continually assess the strength, flexibility and position of available supports. Their exceptionally long arms, powerful grasping hands and highly mobile feet allow all four limbs to participate in climbing and suspension. Orangutans may even deliberately sway flexible vegetation, using their own body weight to bring otherwise distant branches within reach.
Youngsters acquire these abilities gradually. Initially remaining close to their mother, they begin making short independent movements before progressively travelling farther around her. Every reach and transfer provides experience in judging distance, testing branches and coordinating hands and feet while suspended above the forest floor.
This extended apprenticeship is possible because orangutan mothers provide extraordinarily prolonged care. Offspring may remain closely associated with them for seven or more years, during which locomotion develops alongside knowledge of foods, nesting and the geography of the forest.
For a young orangutan, therefore, learning to climb is considerably more than physical development. It is the gradual acquisition of the movement system upon which almost every aspect of adult life will depend.

Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
Orangutans do more than depend upon the rainforest, they help maintain it. Fruit forms an important part of their diet, and seeds swallowed or carried while feeding can be deposited elsewhere as the animals travel through the canopy. Research in Borneo found seeds in 73% of orangutan faecal samples examined, with some containing hundreds of seeds. For several plant species studied, seeds dispersed by orangutans also germinated successfully or more quickly than seeds that had not passed through or been handled by them.
This makes orangutans important seed dispersers, sometimes described as gardeners of the forest. Their ability to transport relatively large seeds is especially valuable because smaller animals may be unable to disperse them. By carrying seeds away from parent trees, orangutans contribute to forest renewal and plant diversity, creating an ecological relationship in which healthy forests support orangutans while orangutans, in turn, help forests regenerate. Their disappearance could therefore alter processes extending far beyond the loss of the animals themselves
