PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Feather Hunt captures a young lion cub completely absorbed by a spotted feather standing lightly against the dusty ground. Seated on its haunches, the cub extends one rounded forepaw towards its delicate discovery, its lowered head and concentrated gaze following the feather with unmistakable interest.
Warm, dry grass rises beside the cub while scattered stones and fine earth create a simple savanna foreground. The feather provides an intricate contrast to the surrounding landscape, its dark surface patterned with small pale markings and its soft lower barbs catching the light close to the ground. Beyond the immediate scene, the vegetation dissolves into a muted haze of ochre and gold.
Low sunlight illuminates the cub from behind and to one side, outlining the ears and softly textured juvenile coat with a narrow rim of amber light. Its raised paw, forward-focused eyes and poised body create a moment suspended between observation and action, as though the slightest movement might provoke an enthusiastic swat.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Lion (Panthera leo) is born with none of the polished hunting abilities eventually required of an adult predator. Lion cubs acquire these skills gradually, combining physical development, observation and an enormous amount of play.
From an early age, cubs chase, wrestle, ambush and pounce upon one another. They may also investigate and swat at moving vegetation, insects, feathers and other objects encountered around their surroundings. These apparently playful actions exercise many of the same movements later required during hunting, including tracking motion with the eyes, coordinating the forelimbs, judging distance and timing a pounce.
As cubs grow, their games become increasingly vigorous and sophisticated. They practise approaching unseen companions, springing from concealment and grappling with littermates, while strengthening the muscles and coordination necessary for adult life. Eventually, youngsters begin accompanying older lions and gain opportunities to observe genuine hunts.
Successful predation requires considerably more than instinct alone. Behind the power and precision of an adult lion lies a long childhood spent experimenting with movement, and sometimes the smallest fluttering object provides an irresistible opportunity to practise.

Lion (Panthera leo)
The spotted coat of a Lion cub is more than a juvenile decoration. Young Lions are born with dark rosettes and spots across their tawny fur, markings that are considerably stronger than those usually retained by adults. Against dry grasses, scrub and broken shade, these irregular patterns help disrupt the cub's outline, providing useful camouflage during a stage when it is small and vulnerable. Lionesses initially keep newborn cubs concealed in dense vegetation, rocky areas or other sheltered sites away from the pride, moving them periodically before eventually introducing them to the wider social group.
As cubs grow, their markings gradually fade, although faint spots can sometimes remain visible on the legs and underside of adults. This early camouflage illustrates why apparently simple features of an animal's appearance are closely connected to the habitat in which it evolved. Vegetation providing concealment, shade and secure resting places is part of functional Lion habitat, particularly for females raising young. Conservation of Lion landscapes therefore involves more than preserving open hunting grounds; it requires maintaining the varied structure of savanna, woodland, scrub and cover that supports different activities and life stages.
