PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Feather Bed presents a tiny Tawny Owl nestling asleep within the deep curve of an old wicker basket. Almost spherical beneath its covering of pale down, the owlet has settled into a loose bed of feathers, its eyes closed and small hooked bill resting against the softness of its breast. Faint grey and tawny markings are beginning to emerge through the creamy juvenile plumage, while wisps of down catch the light around the rounded head and shoulders.
The basket is crowded with feathers of remarkable variety. Barred, spotted and softly mottled patterns overlap around the sleeping bird, their vanes and delicate edges contrasting with the rough, twisting strands of aged wicker. Several have escaped onto the surrounding wooden surface, extending the arrangement beyond the basket itself.
Warm light enters from the upper right, illuminating the owlet's crown and transforming the finest strands of down into a glowing halo. Deeper browns remain within the basket and background, allowing the pale youngster to emerge gently from its surroundings. Intimate and still, the composition centres entirely upon the softness and vulnerability of early life.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) begins life remarkably different from the compact, densely feathered woodland hunter it will become. Newly hatched owlets are small and dependent, with closed eyes and a sparse covering of pale natal down. Unable to regulate their body temperature effectively during their earliest days, they rely heavily upon the warmth and protection provided by the female while the male supplies much of the food for the growing family.
Development is rapid. A second, thicker covering of down gives young Tawny Owls their characteristically soft and rounded appearance, while the flight feathers, tail feathers and contour plumage gradually develop beneath and through it. Their eyes open during early nestling development, and strengthening feet and legs increasingly allow the youngsters to reposition themselves within the nest and investigate their immediate surroundings.
Throughout this period, food delivered by the adults supports exceptionally fast growth. The owlets progress from almost helpless hatchlings towards increasingly alert and mobile youngsters in only a matter of weeks. Their fluffy appearance therefore represents a fleeting stage: beneath the down, the structures required for climbing, flight and eventually independent hunting are already developing, preparing each young owl for the branching stage that will soon carry it beyond the security of the nest.

Tawny Owl (Strix aluco)
Tawny Owl chicks hatch remarkably undeveloped. They are altricial, emerging covered in soft down and entirely dependent upon their parents for food, warmth and protection. A typical clutch contains two or three eggs, which the female incubates for around 30 days. Because incubation begins with the first egg rather than waiting for the clutch to be complete, the chicks hatch at different times. This difference in age can help ensure that at least some young survive during seasons when prey is scarce and the parents cannot provide equally for an entire brood.
This vulnerable beginning makes secure nesting places particularly important. Tawny Owls are cavity nesters, commonly raising their young inside holes in mature trees, although suitable nest boxes can provide alternatives where natural cavities are scarce. The chicks remain downy and dependent for several weeks before reaching the extraordinary next stage of their development: they leave the nest while still unable to fly properly. Preserving mature, cavity-bearing trees, and providing appropriately designed nest boxes where necessary, therefore helps maintain the sheltered nurseries upon which successive generations depend.
