PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Driftwood Cradle captures a young Australian Sea Lion pup sleeping within the sweeping curve of a piece of weathered timber washed onto the shore. Nestled into its smooth hollow, the pale pup rests with its head against the wood, eyes closed and body tucked comfortably within the natural shelter. The great curling form of the driftwood wraps around the youngster like an accidental cradle, its deeply weathered grain contrasting with the softness of the pup's dense coat.
Beyond, the shoreline stretches towards a glowing horizon as the setting sun turns the sea and sky shades of amber, cream and gold. Scattered shells, pebbles and fragments of rock surround the timber, while distant waves and rocky outcrops soften into the evening light. A fine rim of sunlight catches the pup's fur, completing a peaceful coastal scene in which something shaped by the sea has become, for one quiet moment, the perfect place to sleep.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea) has one of the most unusual early-life stories of any seal or sea lion. Found only around southern and western Australia, the species follows an exceptionally long breeding cycle of approximately 17–18 months, rather than producing pups at roughly the same time each year. As a result, breeding seasons gradually shift through the calendar and can differ between colonies.
A newborn pup depends heavily upon its mother, who alternates periods ashore nursing with increasingly long foraging trips at sea. Mother and pup recognise one another using distinctive calls and scent, an essential ability within busy breeding colonies where many animals may be gathered together. Nursing can continue for well over a year, giving youngsters an unusually extended period of maternal care.
Young Australian Sea Lions gradually become stronger and increasingly adventurous around the colony, learning to swim and explore shallow coastal waters before developing the skills required for independent life at sea. This prolonged childhood reflects the remarkably slow reproductive rhythm of one of Australia's unique marine mammals.

Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea)
Australian sea lions have one of the most unusual reproductive schedules of any pinniped. Unlike most seals and sea lions, they do not breed annually. Females generally produce a pup only once every 17–18 months, and breeding seasons occur at different times among colonies. Mothers also provide exceptionally prolonged care, nursing their young for around 15–18 months while alternating periods ashore with foraging trips at sea.
This slow reproductive cycle places a natural limit on how quickly depleted colonies can recover. Females also show extraordinary loyalty to their birthplace, typically returning to their natal colony to breed rather than moving between colonies. As a result, the loss of breeding females or pups from a small colony cannot easily be replaced by animals arriving from elsewhere. Protecting breeding sites and improving pup survival are therefore central to securing future generations of this uniquely Australian marine mammal.
