PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Discovery gathers three feathered Velociraptors around a single pale egg resting among the grasses and wildflowers of an open prehistoric landscape. The nearest animal leans forward to investigate, one clawed forelimb resting lightly against the shell, while its companions approach from either side with heads lowered and eyes fixed upon the curious object between them.
Fine feathering follows the contours of their slender bodies, extending along the forelimbs and tails and softening the familiar predatory silhouette. Their narrow heads, lightly built frames and long balancing tails give the trio an unmistakably agile appearance, while the curved claws of their hands and feet remain visible beneath the plumage.
Around them, tiny flowers and low vegetation spread across the sunlit ground. Dragonflies cross the clear blue sky overhead and a butterfly passes close to the group, introducing smaller lives into the prehistoric scene. Dark conifers rise towards distant mountains, enclosing the meadow beneath scattered white clouds.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Velociraptor (Velociraptor mongoliensis) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 75–71 million years ago, in what is now Mongolia and neighbouring parts of Central Asia. Some of its most famous fossils come from the Djadokhta Formation of the Gobi Desert, which preserves an environment of arid to semi-arid landscapes, windblown sand and episodic water sources.
The real Velociraptor was considerably smaller than its cinematic reputation suggests. An adult was roughly two metres long, much of that length consisting of its tail, and probably weighed only around 15–20 kilograms. It belonged to the dromaeosaurids, a group of agile theropod dinosaurs closely related to the evolutionary lineage from which birds emerged.
There is compelling evidence that Velociraptor possessed feathers. Fossils preserve small structures called quill knobs on the forearm, attachment points associated with substantial feathers in living birds. Velociraptor could not fly, but these feathers may have served functions such as display, temperature regulation, protecting eggs or assisting balance and movement.
Each foot carried the famous enlarged, curved second-toe claw, which was normally held raised rather than continually scraping across the ground. Exactly how dromaeosaurids used these claws remains debated, although gripping and restraining prey is now considered an important possibility.
Eggs provide another connection between dinosaurs and birds. Fossils of other dromaeosaurids and closely related theropods reveal adults positioned over nests, organised arrangements of eggs and reproductive anatomy strikingly reminiscent of birds. We cannot assume that the egg pictured here belonged to these particular animals, but reproduction in their broader family was already recognisably bird-like.
Velociraptor therefore occupies a fascinating place in the story of dinosaur evolution. Beneath the famous claws and predatory teeth was an animal covered in feathers, one whose appearance reminds us that the boundary between the dinosaurs of the Lost World and the birds around us today is far smaller than it once seemed.
