PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Carrot Basket captures a young European Rabbit nestled unexpectedly among the morning’s garden harvest. Almost completely surrounded by freshly gathered carrots and their abundant green tops, the small rabbit sits within a deep woven basket, its compact body appearing scarcely larger than the vegetables around it.
Soft grey-brown fur catches the warm light along the youngster’s back and upright ears, while the finer hairs surrounding its cheeks and muzzle are rendered against the rich orange of the carrots. One dark, reflective eye turns towards the viewer, giving the quiet scene an unmistakable sense of discovery.
The basket itself becomes an intimate little landscape of interwoven willow, rough carrot skins and feathery foliage. Beyond it, flowers and greenery dissolve into a softly illuminated garden, while low sunlight enters from the upper right, creating a golden haze through the vegetation.
Set upon weathered timber with stray leaves scattered around its base, the composition transforms an ordinary garden harvest into a gentle encounter, as though its smallest occupant has been discovered only moments before the basket was carried away.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) begins life very differently from the alert, furred youngster familiar above ground. Newborn rabbits, known as kits, are born blind, nearly hairless and entirely dependent upon the protection of an underground nest. Their mother prepares a nursery chamber within the burrow, lining it with grasses and with fur plucked from her own body to provide insulation.
Remarkably, a doe does not remain continuously beside her young. She typically visits the nest only briefly to nurse, often around once or twice within a twenty-four-hour period. Her milk is exceptionally rich, allowing the kits to consume enough during these short visits to sustain their rapid growth. Spending little time at the nest may also reduce attention from predators.
Development is correspondingly swift. Fur appears during the first days of life, the eyes open after roughly ten days, and the young gradually begin exploring beyond the nest as their coordination and senses develop. By only a few weeks of age, vegetation becomes increasingly important alongside milk.
This rapid transition reflects the European Rabbit’s life as a small prey species. The helpless newborn hidden beneath the earth must develop quickly into an alert young rabbit capable of feeding, navigating its surroundings and responding to danger independently.

We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
