PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Blackberry Feast captures a young American Black Bear seated quietly among fruiting brambles on the sunlit forest floor. Surrounded by ferns, moss and dense woodland vegetation, the cub pauses beside clusters of blackberries at different stages of ripeness, from pale developing fruits and deep red berries to glossy black fruit.
Its compact body is covered in dense black fur, softened along the face by warm brown highlights across the muzzle and around the eyes. Upright rounded ears frame the head as the bear turns towards a nearby blackberry cane, appearing intent upon the fruit suspended just beyond its nose. Its forepaws rest loosely before its body, while one hind paw is visible beneath the surrounding vegetation.
Blackberry stems weave naturally through the foreground, their serrated green leaves catching scattered points of sunlight. Behind the cub, arching fern fronds and the broad trunk of a mature tree establish the layered structure of the woodland. Warm light filters through the canopy, illuminating the bear's profile and transforming an ordinary moment of foraging into a quiet portrait of abundance within the summer forest.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
For The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus), the forest changes dramatically as summer progresses. The young vegetation and protein-rich foods available earlier in the year are increasingly joined by an abundance of fruits, and bears become enthusiastic consumers of berries wherever productive patches occur. Blackberries, blueberries, huckleberries, raspberries and many other wild fruits can become important seasonal foods across different parts of the species' vast range.
This apparently simple behaviour is part of a much larger annual cycle. As late summer gives way to autumn, black bears enter a period known as hyperphagia, during which feeding activity increases substantially. Bears may spend much of their waking time searching for calorie-rich foods, building the fat reserves that will sustain them through the coming winter. Where available, berries are followed by energy-dense autumn foods such as acorns, beechnuts and other mast.
Finding these temporary resources requires both an exceptional sense of smell and knowledge of the landscape. Bears can repeatedly return to productive feeding areas as foods ripen, and cubs travelling with their mothers have opportunities to learn where important seasonal resources occur.
Their feeding also influences the forest itself. Seeds swallowed with fruit may survive passage through the digestive system and be deposited elsewhere in the landscape. A bear feeding quietly among summer berries therefore participates in the woodland's ecology not simply as a consumer, but also as a potential disperser of the plants upon which it feeds.

American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)
Late summer and autumn are periods of intense feeding for black bears as they prepare for the months spent in their winter dens. Berries and other fruits can provide an abundant source of energy during this period, followed in many regions by calorie-rich foods such as acorns and other nuts. Bears may spend much of their waking time foraging, gradually accumulating the fat reserves that will sustain them when winter greatly reduces opportunities to feed.
For females, the abundance of these seasonal foods can also influence reproduction. Black bears mate months before winter but use delayed implantation, with pregnancy progressing only later in the year. A female's nutritional condition and accumulated reserves are closely connected with her ability to support pregnancy and nurse cubs born inside the den. Protecting productive berry patches, mast-producing woodlands and other natural feeding areas therefore helps support not only individual bears, but the successful recruitment of future generations.
