PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Arctic Mirror captures a young polar bear pausing over a remarkably clear patch of frozen blue ice. With its head lowered and nose almost touching the surface, the cub peers down at a perfect reflection staring back from beneath its paws.
Its soft white coat and rounded juvenile features are mirrored in the glass-like surface, creating the illusion of a second little bear hidden below the ice. Fine fractures trace delicate lines through the frozen blue while ridges of powdery snow gather around its edges. The cub's broad paws rest cautiously near the boundary between snow and ice as it leans closer to investigate.
Cool Arctic blues and clean winter whites give the composition a quiet simplicity, allowing the reflected face to become the unexpected centre of the scene. Above and below, two nearly identical cubs appear to meet nose to nose, transforming an ordinary moment of exploration into a wonderfully curious encounter.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) has much to discover when it first begins exploring the Arctic world beyond its mother. Smell is particularly important to polar bears, whose powerful sense of scent will eventually become one of their most valuable tools for locating food across enormous expanses of snow and ice. Cubs begin developing these sensory skills through constant investigation of their surroundings.
Their eyesight and hearing also contribute to this growing awareness, helping youngsters respond to movement, unfamiliar sounds and changes in the landscape. Objects and surfaces may be approached, sniffed and examined as a cub gathers information about a world that is still entirely new.
A reflection presents an especially intriguing visual stimulus, but seeing an image in a reflective surface should not be confused with recognising oneself. Scientists use carefully controlled experiments to investigate self-recognition in animals, and there is no established evidence that polar bears understand a reflection as an image of themselves. For a curious cub, however, investigating something unfamiliar is itself valuable experience, gradually building awareness of the complex environment in which it will grow.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
A young Polar Bear is not born knowing how to hunt successfully on the sea ice. Cubs remain with their mothers for roughly two and a half years, during which they must learn how to navigate shifting ice, recognise productive hunting areas, locate seals and behave appropriately during a hunt. Much of this education comes through observation and imitation. Cubs follow their mothers across the ice, investigate the same scents and watch as she searches for seal breathing holes and other opportunities to capture prey. Over time, this prolonged apprenticeship transforms an inexperienced youngster into a bear capable of surviving independently in one of Earth's most demanding environments.
One of the most important tools in this education is the Polar Bear's exceptional sense of smell. Ringed seals maintain breathing holes through winter sea ice, and bears can locate these concealed hunting sites by scent before waiting patiently for a seal to surface. Young cubs initially contribute little to hunting themselves; instead, they accompany their mother, share her kills and gradually learn the patience, stillness and environmental awareness required for successful hunting. Because this learning period lasts for years, cub survival depends not only upon their mother's ability to obtain enough food, but also upon having sufficient time alongside her to acquire the skills they will eventually need alone.
