PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Soft as Snow presents a very young harp seal resting low against a pristine expanse of snow, its small body almost disappearing into the surrounding white. The pup faces the viewer from close to ground level, its rounded head resting gently against the powder while enormous dark eyes create an immediate point of connection.
A dense coat of fine white fur covers the body from crown to flank, with only the black nose, delicate mouth and sparse whiskers interrupting its pale colouring. Subtle shadows around the muzzle and eyes give definition to the face without disturbing the softness of the predominantly white composition. Individual hairs catch the cool ambient light, producing a faint silvery sheen along the pup's head and back.
The surrounding landscape remains deliberately restrained. Snow stretches towards a softly blurred frozen horizon, broken only by distant dark rocks and indistinct formations. Pale lavender, blue-grey and white tones dominate the scene, allowing the pup's dark, reflective eyes to stand in striking contrast to the quiet brightness of its frozen nursery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Harp Seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) undergoes one of the most dramatic transformations of infancy among marine mammals. Newborn pups are famous for their thick white coat, known as lanugo, which gives this early developmental stage its familiar name: the whitecoat.
The colour is closely suited to a life that begins on sea ice. Rather than being born in the water, harp seal pups are delivered on floating ice during highly synchronised breeding seasons in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Their white natal fur provides effective visual concealment against this frozen nursery, while its dense structure helps insulate the pup during its first vulnerable weeks. It is not, however, designed for prolonged swimming.
The whitecoat period is remarkably brief. Pups grow extremely rapidly on their mother's exceptionally rich milk and are generally nursed for only around 12 days. Soon afterwards, the white lanugo begins to shed, revealing a shorter silvery-grey juvenile coat beneath. Within only a few weeks of birth, the familiar snow-white pup has effectively disappeared, making the whitecoat not a permanent colouration, but a fleeting uniform of earliest infancy.

Harp Seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus)
For a young Harp Seal, the apparently empty expanse of pack ice is only the beginning of a life spent travelling across enormous areas of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. After weaning and the loss of its white natal coat, the youngster gradually develops the swimming and diving abilities needed to forage at sea. Adults undertake extensive seasonal migrations between breeding, moulting and feeding areas, sometimes travelling thousands of kilometres each year. Beneath the surface they pursue a varied diet dominated by fish and crustaceans, with capelin, Arctic cod, herring and krill among the many prey used across different regions and seasons.
This mobility connects Harp Seals to changes occurring throughout the wider marine ecosystem. Their distribution can shift as sea temperature, ice conditions and prey availability alter where productive feeding grounds occur. Scientists therefore monitor Harp Seals not only by counting animals on their breeding ice, but through aerial surveys, satellite tracking, diet studies and assessments of body condition and reproduction. These different measures help reveal whether an apparently abundant population continues to have access to the productive ocean food webs required to support millions of highly mobile marine predators.
