PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Sheltered captures a young African Bush Elephant calf nestled within the shelter of its herd as the last light of day moves across the grasslands. Curled against the ground, the small elephant rests with its eyes closed, trunk folded softly across its front feet and one broad ear relaxed against its head.
Around the sleeping calf rise the immense legs of the adults, their deeply creased skin forming a protective wall on either side. The contrast in scale gives the scene its quiet intimacy: a tiny, vulnerable youngster surrounded by the towering forms of animals many times its size. Warm sunset light catches the fine hairs along the calf's head and back and illuminates the dry grasses beyond in glowing shades of amber and gold. Framed almost entirely by the bodies of its family, the calf rests at the calm centre of the composition, sheltered within the reassuring presence of the herd.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana) begins life after an extraordinary pregnancy lasting close to 22 months, the longest known gestation of any living land mammal. A newborn calf may already weigh around 90–120 kilograms, yet it remains highly dependent on its mother and the wider family herd for protection, nourishment and learning.
Elephant childhood is remarkably social. Calves are raised within matriarchal family groups composed primarily of related females and their young. Mothers provide milk and close protection, while other females may act as allomothers, helping guard, guide and care for younger herd members. This shared attention also gives inexperienced females opportunities to learn skills they may later use with calves of their own.
Young elephants must master their remarkable trunks gradually. Early movements can be awkward and experimental as calves learn to coordinate the thousands of muscles involved in smelling, touching, drinking, feeding and communicating. Through years of observation, play and interaction with older elephants, a calf learns not only how to use its body, but how to navigate the complex social world of the herd.

For a young elephant, protection extends far beyond the presence of its mother. African bush elephants live within complex, closely bonded family groups in which calves grow surrounded by mothers, sisters, aunts and other relatives. These experienced females provide protection and supervision, while young elephants learn essential social and behavioural skills through years of observation and interaction. The matriarch also carries knowledge that can help guide the family through its environment.
Protecting these multigenerational family structures is therefore an important part of elephant conservation. The loss of mature females can affect not only population numbers but the social knowledge and stability available to younger animals. Conservation measures that safeguard established herds and the landscapes in which they can remain together help give calves the secure social environment they need to reach independence and eventually contribute to the next generation.
