PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Secrets of the Tidepool captures a young sea otter investigating a shallow pool among the rocks of a rugged shoreline. Leaning forward at the water's edge, its compact body stretches across the uneven stone while its nose hovers just above the glassy surface, as though examining the small world revealed beneath.
Clear water exposes pebbles, shells and tiny marine forms scattered across the bottom, interwoven with ribbons of brown and green seaweed. Patches of pink coralline growth introduce subtle colour among the submerged rock, while sunlight catches the ripples spreading outward from the otter's muzzle. Its dense brown coat appears softly textured against the harder surfaces surrounding it, with individual whiskers illuminated above the water.
Beyond the pool, weathered rocks frame a narrow glimpse of the open sea. The close viewpoint concentrates attention on the meeting of fur, stone and water, transforming a small pocket of the intertidal shore into a richly detailed scene of observation and discovery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) is a highly specialised predator whose feeding habits can profoundly influence the coastal ecosystems it inhabits. Rather than pursuing fast-moving fish as their principal food, sea otters commonly forage for bottom-dwelling invertebrates, including sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, snails and other prey found among rocky reefs and coastal sediments.
Their sensitive forepaws and prominent whiskers are particularly useful when searching in complex underwater environments. Otters can feel for prey within crevices and beneath rocks, while their whiskers help detect subtle movements and vibrations in the surrounding water. Some individuals also use stones as tools to dislodge or break open hard-shelled prey, making sea otters one of relatively few mammals known for habitual tool use.
Their ecological importance extends far beyond their own feeding requirements. By consuming herbivores such as sea urchins, sea otters can reduce grazing pressure on kelp, helping extensive underwater forests persist. In this way, a single predator can influence an entire coastal community, linking the smallest creatures of the rocky shore with the structure and resilience of the wider marine ecosystem.

Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris)
Beneath the seemingly quiet surface of rocky shores lies an exceptionally rich feeding ground for Sea Otters. They are dietary generalists, taking a remarkable variety of bottom-dwelling invertebrates including sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, snails and other prey. Sensitive forepaws help them locate and capture food among rocks, crevices and sediments, while shallow coastal waters allow repeated dives to the seafloor. Individual otters can nevertheless become surprisingly specialised, concentrating on particular prey according to what is available within their home range.
This flexible approach to feeding has also produced one of the Sea Otter's most celebrated behaviours, tool use. Some individuals carry stones or use other hard objects to break open shells, while others pound prey against rocks to reach the food inside. Tool use varies enormously between individuals and populations and becomes especially valuable when preferred prey is scarce or when an otter specialises in particularly hard-shelled foods. Recent research found that tool-using Southern Sea Otters could gain access to larger or harder prey while reducing damage to their teeth, an important advantage for an animal that must continue feeding intensively throughout its life.
