PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Safe Beneath Her portrays a young lion cub resting on the sun-warmed earth beneath the protective presence of an adult lioness. Flattened comfortably against the ground, the cub gazes directly outward with its chin nestled between its forepaws, while the lioness's powerful lower legs and enormous paws stand immediately beside it.
The surrounding landscape is deliberately spare. Fine reddish soil, scattered stones and patches of dry ground extend beyond the pair, allowing the contrast in their scale to become the defining feature of the composition. Juvenile spots remain clearly visible across the cub's forehead, back and hindquarters, breaking up the warm tawny tones of its soft coat.
Strong sunlight falls across the exposed earth while the cub remains almost entirely within the broad pool of shade cast by the adult above. That division between brilliant heat and cool shadow gives the image its quiet intimacy. Without needing to reveal the lioness in full, her size and proximity create an unmistakable impression of security around the much smaller cub.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Lion (Panthera leo) differs from most other wild cats in the highly social structure of its life. Lionesses commonly live alongside related females and their offspring, creating a network in which young cubs can grow surrounded by several familiar adults rather than relying exclusively upon their own mother.
During their earliest months, cubs are exceptionally vulnerable. Their small size leaves them poorly equipped to defend themselves, and females initially keep newborn litters concealed before gradually introducing them to other pride members. Once integrated, cubs spend considerable time close to adult lions, where proximity provides both protection and opportunities for social learning.
Lionesses within a pride may synchronise reproduction, producing cubs at similar times. Females can tolerate, and sometimes nurse, one another's young, although maternal investment and access to milk vary between individuals and circumstances. Cubs consequently grow within an unusually complex social environment for a cat.
Even as youngsters become increasingly adventurous, retreating towards an adult remains an important option when something unfamiliar appears. For a small lion cub surrounded by the hazards of the savanna, the towering body of a familiar adult can represent one of the safest places in its world.

Lion (Panthera leo)
Lion cubs grow up within one of the most unusual social systems among wild cats. During their first weeks, a lioness generally keeps her newborn cubs concealed away from the pride, but at around five to six weeks they begin joining other youngsters in a communal crèche. Related females frequently give birth within similar periods and may help guard and even nurse one another's cubs. Research has found that cub survival can be higher when related females reproduce at similar times, illustrating how the Lion's social organisation provides young animals with protection extending beyond their own mother.
Yet the security represented by a pride is not guaranteed. Cubs are particularly vulnerable when pride structure is disrupted, whether through the loss of adult females or the replacement of resident males. Lionesses collectively defend territories and young, while stable male coalitions can protect prides from rival males; when new males take control, young cubs may be killed. Conservation therefore involves protecting not merely a certain number of individual Lions, but stable social groups in which adults can survive long enough to raise successive generations. The loss of a breeding adult can alter relationships and protection throughout an entire pride.
