PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Reflections of Spring follows a young White-tailed Deer as it pauses midway across a narrow timber bridge in the morning forest. Standing upon slender, slightly splayed legs, the spotted fawn lowers its head towards the water below, its attention captured by the dark reflection suspended beneath it. The small animal appears momentarily poised between curiosity and caution, surrounded by the enormous scale of a woodland that it is only beginning to explore.
Warm sunlight filters between the trees, illuminating the fawn's russet coat and scattering gold across the moss-covered timber beneath its hooves. Ferns crowd the banks on either side, while damp rocks, moss and shadow frame the shallow stream flowing beneath the crossing. In the water, the fawn's inverted reflection stretches towards the foreground, creating a quiet visual connection between animal and landscape. The simple wooden bridge becomes the centre of the composition: a small passage across running water and, for the young deer standing upon it, another unfamiliar piece of the forest encountered one careful step at a time.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) enters the world remarkably well developed for a newborn mammal. Fawns can stand within a short period after birth and soon begin walking, yet their earliest movements are understandably less controlled than those of an adult. Long legs, a relatively small body and rapidly developing muscles must be coordinated while the youngster learns to negotiate the uneven ground of its woodland environment.
This early mobility is essential. Although very young fawns spend considerable periods concealed while their mothers forage elsewhere, they must also be capable of following when the doe relocates them. As the weeks progress, walking develops into increasingly confident running, bounding and manoeuvring through vegetation. Uneven slopes, fallen timber, shallow waterways and other natural obstacles all become part of the young animal's developing experience of its surroundings.
A fawn's characteristic escape behaviour also begins to emerge during this period. White-tailed deer ultimately become powerful runners and agile leapers, relying upon rapid acceleration and abrupt changes of direction when threatened. The tentative movements of infancy therefore form the beginnings of the extraordinary coordination that will later allow the adult deer to travel swiftly through dense and irregular terrain.

White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
During its first weeks of life, a White-tailed Deer fawn survives through concealment rather than speed. Its reddish-brown coat is scattered with distinctive white spots that break up the outline of its body and resemble patches of sunlight filtering through leaves onto the forest floor. Young fawns also have relatively little scent and instinctively remain motionless when danger approaches. Together, these adaptations make a quietly hidden youngster surprisingly difficult for predators to detect.
The doe strengthens this strategy through an unusual form of maternal care, she deliberately spends much of the day away from her newborn. Rather than indicating abandonment, this reduces activity around the hiding place that might attract predators. She returns only periodically to nurse and groom the fawn, while remaining within the surrounding area. As the youngster grows stronger and faster, this secretive “hider” stage gradually ends and it begins travelling increasingly with its mother. Human observers who discover a solitary fawn are therefore generally advised to leave it exactly where it is and allow the doe to return undisturbed.
