PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Reflections at Low Tide captures a young California sea lion stretched across a seaweed-covered rock beside a shallow coastal tide pool. Lowering its head towards the still water, the pup appears absorbed by the reflected face looking back from beneath its muzzle, while tiny fish remain visible below the glassy surface.
Its dark brown juvenile coat is rendered in fine, close-lying fur, warmed along the back and rounded head by the last golden light of the day. Large dark eyes and delicate whiskers draw attention towards the pup's inquisitive expression, while one long foreflipper rests prominently against the rock.
Around the animal, wet strands of brown seaweed follow the uneven contours of the intertidal shore, catching small points of reflected light. The tide pool creates a quiet opening within these richly textured surroundings, mirroring the pup and the amber sky above. Beyond, dark rocks interrupt the softly blurred ocean as the setting sun glows near the horizon, bathing the entire shoreline in deep copper, bronze and gold.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) belongs to the eared seals, or otariids, a group whose anatomy differs significantly from the true seals, or phocids. One of the easiest distinctions to see is the presence of small external ear flaps, but an equally important difference lies in the way their limbs function.
California sea lions possess long, powerful foreflippers that provide most of the propulsion when swimming. On land, they can rotate their hind flippers forward beneath the body and use all four limbs for support. This allows them to raise their bodies clear of the ground, walk, climb and manoeuvre over uneven surfaces with an agility that true seals cannot match. Harbor seals, by comparison, cannot rotate their hind limbs underneath themselves and generally move ashore by wriggling or undulating the body.
For a young sea lion growing up around beaches and rocky coastal habitat, this versatility is extremely useful. Its body is adapted not simply for life in the ocean, but for negotiating the complicated boundary where land and sea continually meet.

California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus)
For a California sea lion pup, conditions far out at sea can determine how much food eventually reaches it on shore. Mothers alternate between nursing their pups and spending several days at sea searching for prey. During periods of unusually warm ocean temperatures, important high-energy prey such as sardines and anchovies may become less available near breeding colonies, forcing females to travel farther or forage for longer. Their pups must then endure longer periods without milk while waiting for their mothers to return.
The consequences can be dramatic. Between 2013 and 2016, unusual ocean conditions contributed to widespread prey shortages and the stranding of thousands of undernourished young California sea lions. Today, more than fifty years of monitoring at San Miguel Island allows scientists to connect ocean temperatures, prey conditions and pup health, helping predict years when malnourished pups may be especially numerous. California sea lion pups have consequently become valuable indicators of changes occurring throughout the wider marine ecosystem.
