PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Rain Shower captures a Common Hippopotamus standing squarely in shallow water beneath a curtain of falling rain. Viewed almost directly from the front, the animal fills the composition with its rounded body, broad head and four remarkably sturdy limbs, offering an unusually clear portrait of the powerful structure that supports one of Africa's heaviest land mammals..
Its eyes are gently closed against the rain while wat er streams across the forehead, muzzle and deeply folded skin of the neck. Small rounded ears project from either side of the head, catching the warm backlight, while droplets gather along the broad nostrils and heavy lips before falling into the water below.
The animal's wet hide shifts from dark slate-grey across the back to warmer brown and pink tones around the face, throat and chest. Deep creases follow the shoulders and legs, contrasting with the smoother, glistening surfaces of the upper body.
Golden light filters through the rainfall from behind, illuminating suspended droplets and creating a luminous haze around the hippo's silhouette. Beneath its feet, the shallow water breaks into small ripples and reflections, grounding the animal within the saturated landscape.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)
Despite spending much of the day in rivers, lakes and wetlands, the Common Hippopotamus remains fully capable of travelling considerable distances across land. After sunset, individuals commonly leave the water to graze, following established pathways into surrounding grasslands before returning to their aquatic refuges.
Supporting such a massive body requires extraordinarily robust limbs. A hippo's legs appear short relative to its barrel-shaped torso, but their compact proportions place the body weight over strong columns of bone. Each foot bears four toes, which spread under load and help distribute the animal's weight across soft or muddy ground.
Their heavy appearance can be deceptive. Hippopotamuses are capable of moving surprisingly quickly over short distances and should never be regarded as slow or cumbersome animals. Rather than relying upon long, flexible strides, their terrestrial movement is built around strength, stability and the efficient support of several tonnes of body mass.
This relationship with land is essential to hippo ecology. Water provides daytime refuge and protection from heat, but grasses growing beyond the riverbank provide most of their food. Every evening, therefore, the hippopotamus undergoes a transition that has shaped its daily existence for generations, leaving the security of the water and becoming, for several hours, a traveller of the land.

Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)
Water is fundamental to the hippopotamus's unusual semi-aquatic way of life. Hippos normally spend much of the daylight period submerged or partly immersed, using rivers, lakes and wetlands as refuges from heat and intense solar radiation. Their skin is particularly vulnerable to prolonged exposure and must remain moist; specialised glands produce a reddish secretion that helps protect the skin and has antimicrobial properties. Rainfall also renews the grasslands surrounding waterways, linking the condition of both aquatic and terrestrial habitat to the resources hippos need.
During prolonged dry periods, however, suitable water can contract dramatically. Research along Tanzania's Great Ruaha River found that as surface water disappeared, hippos became increasingly concentrated into the few remaining pools. Such crowding can intensify competition and place additional pressure on nearby grazing areas. Protecting hippos therefore requires conservation at the scale of entire river catchments, maintaining natural flows, limiting damaging water extraction and safeguarding wetlands so that reliable aquatic refuges remain available through the dry season.
