PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Puddle Pile-Up captures four young piglets crowded happily together in a shallow patch of farmyard mud. Spattered from snout to tail, the youngsters press against one another in an untidy heap, one piglet leaning across the backs of its companions while another settles almost belly-deep into the puddle below.
Their damp coats are rendered in earthy browns, with wet bristles and streaks of mud creating subtle differences in texture across each small body. Bright eyes, soft folded ears and rounded snouts emerge from mud-speckled faces, while the overlapping poses give the group an irresistible sense of movement and companionship.
Beneath them, churned earth has filled with rainwater, forming a glossy brown pool broken by tiny ripples, hoof impressions and ridges of thick mud. The surrounding ground bears the same signs of recent wet weather, extending towards an open rural landscape softened by the shallow depth of field.
With no pristine coat among them and seemingly no concern for becoming any dirtier, the four piglets transform an ordinary muddy patch into a playground, capturing the exuberant disorder of young animals discovering the world together.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Domestic Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) is an exceptionally social and intelligent animal, and those qualities become apparent remarkably early in life. Piglets are born into litters, surrounded from their first hours by siblings with whom they will feed, sleep, explore and play.
During their early weeks, piglets engage in energetic social play that can include running, chasing, pushing, nosing and climbing over one another. These apparently chaotic interactions provide opportunities to develop coordination and learn how other pigs respond to physical contact. Familiar littermates also provide warmth and security, and young pigs commonly rest in close bodily contact.
Mud introduces another characteristic aspect of pig behaviour. Pigs possess relatively few functional sweat glands and cannot cool themselves efficiently by sweating. Wallowing in water or mud can therefore help them lose excess body heat, particularly during warm conditions. A coating of mud may also offer some protection from sunlight and biting insects.
Importantly, wallowing should not be mistaken for evidence that pigs are inherently dirty animals. Given sufficient space, pigs generally separate resting areas from places used for elimination and display considerable organisation within their surroundings.
For a group of young piglets, however, a muddy patch can provide something more immediate: a cool, tactile environment to investigate together. Rooting, splashing, jostling and following siblings all combine physical development with the intensely social nature of growing up as a pig.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
