PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Petals on the Pond captures a young mute swan cygnet floating peacefully upon still water scattered with delicate pink blossom. Its small body is wrapped in soft, creamy down, glowing in the warm light as gentle ripples spread around it.
Several fallen petals have settled across the cygnet's head and back, while dozens more drift across the surface of the pond. Above, flowering branches extend softly into the scene, their blossoms echoed in the water below. A single open flower rests beside the youngster, its rain-speckled petals adding another tiny detail to the quiet setting.
The cygnet's dark eyes and broad grey-black bill contrast gently against its pale down, while the surrounding pinks, creams and reflected light create an atmosphere of softness and tranquillity. Alone within a small world of water and blossom, the young bird appears perfectly at ease, capturing a peaceful moment from the earliest days of life upon the water.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), swan chicks, known as cygnets, enter the world remarkably well prepared for life on the water. Like many waterbirds, they are precocial: they hatch covered in insulating down, with their eyes open, and can walk and swim within a very short time of leaving the egg.
Their independence, however, is only partial. Young cygnets remain closely associated with their parents, which guide them towards feeding areas and vigorously defend them from potential threats. The youngsters begin feeding for themselves early, taking small aquatic plants and invertebrates from the water. Parents may also disturb submerged vegetation while feeding, making pieces of plant material easier for their cygnets to reach.
A newly hatched cygnet looks very different from the brilliant white adult it will eventually become. Young mute swans typically have grey or buff-brown down, which is gradually replaced as they develop their juvenile plumage. The familiar white feathers emerge later as the bird matures. During these early months, swimming beside its family allows the little cygnet to feed, grow and gradually master the watery environment in which it will spend much of its life.

Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
Mute Swan cygnets are precocial, entering the water very soon after hatching and beginning to feed for themselves while remaining closely accompanied by their parents. Their earliest diet includes small aquatic invertebrates alongside soft vegetation, but as they develop, plant material becomes increasingly important. Adult Mute Swans feed predominantly on submerged aquatic vegetation, reaching below the surface with their long necks and sometimes upending to reach plants growing deeper underwater. Cygnets initially concentrate on food available closer to the surface and in shallow margins while their bodies and feeding abilities continue to develop.
Aquatic plants are much more than food for swans. Submerged and emergent vegetation provides habitat for invertebrates and fish, helps stabilise sediments and contributes to the complex biological structure of shallow wetlands. Water quality strongly influences these plant communities: excessive nutrients, sedimentation and pollution can reduce underwater light and alter or eliminate submerged vegetation. Protecting swans and other waterbirds therefore requires conserving the living habitat beneath the water's surface, even when much of that ecosystem remains invisible to people looking across a pond.
