PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
My Turn captures a wonderfully earnest moment between two young Meerkats sharing the highest point of a small earthen mound. One pup has risen into the characteristic upright stance of its species, balancing on its hind feet as it gazes intently across the open landscape. Beside it, a smaller companion appears determined to join the watch, standing against its sibling and wrapping its forelegs around the other's body for support.
Their sandy coats glow in the low, warm light, revealing the fine texture of their fur and the distinctive dark markings surrounding their bright, attentive eyes. Tiny paws grip the uneven surface beneath them while their overlapping bodies create an affectionate contrast between serious vigilance and youthful dependence.
Beyond the mound, the arid landscape recedes into softly blurred grasses and scattered scrub beneath an expansive evening sky. The elevated viewpoint gives the taller pup an appropriately commanding position, while the smaller youngster transforms the familiar meerkat lookout pose into something altogether more playful, as though patiently insisting that it, too, deserves a turn on watch.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is an intensely social mongoose of the dry regions of southern Africa, where family groups cooperate in activities ranging from raising young to defending territory and watching for danger. Their famous upright stance is closely associated with vigilance: while others forage, individuals periodically scan the surrounding landscape for predators such as raptors, jackals and other potential threats.
For young meerkats, these behaviours develop gradually. Pups initially remain dependent upon older members of the group, emerging from the natal burrow when only a few weeks old before beginning to accompany the mob on foraging excursions. During this period they observe and practise many of the behaviours that will eventually become part of adult life.
Sentinel duty itself is not simply a rigid rotation in which every meerkat waits for a prescribed "turn." Individuals take up elevated positions when circumstances allow, scanning while the rest of the group continues its activities. Youngsters can begin performing elements of vigilance as they mature, progressively becoming more competent members of the cooperative group. Through observation, experience and participation, the tiny pup of today gradually learns the remarkable social system upon which an adult meerkat's survival depends.

Meerkat (Suricata suricatta)
Few behaviours are more closely associated with Meerkats than the upright sentinel posture, but keeping watch is genuinely important to the survival of the group. While other members forage with their attention directed toward the ground, an individual may climb onto a termite mound, rock or other elevated position and scan the surroundings for danger. Sentinels produce calls that allow foragers to know a lookout remains on duty, while alarm calls can communicate both the type of predator and the urgency of the threat. The role is shared among members of the group rather than belonging to one permanent guard.
For young Meerkats, this cooperative defence is particularly valuable. Pups and juveniles are especially vulnerable to predators such as eagles, jackals and snakes, and their survival is supported by a remarkable social system in which adults other than their parents help guard, provision and protect them. Meerkat groups remain close enough while foraging to maintain visual and vocal contact, combining individual vigilance with the security of many eyes and ears. Their familiar lookout behaviour is therefore part of something much larger, a cooperative society in which the survival of vulnerable youngsters depends heavily upon the actions of the group around them.
