PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Lost to Mauritius imagines a Dodo standing among the coastal vegetation of Mauritius, illuminated by the last warm light of the day. Its substantial body fills the foreground, supported by powerful legs and broad, splayed feet planted firmly upon the leaf-strewn earth.
Layered plumage covers the bird in muted shades of brown, grey, cream and softly weathered olive, with individual feathers catching the golden light along its breast and neck. A small cluster of curled feathers forms the characteristic tuft at the rear of the body, while the reduced wings lie almost concealed against its sides. Above them, the Dodo's large head and formidable hooked bill create its unmistakable profile.
Ferns and low-growing plants surround the bird beneath the shade of coastal trees, while tropical vegetation frames a tranquil stretch of water beyond. Distant mountains rise through the evening haze, placing the animal within the volcanic island landscape that shaped its evolution.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) lived only on Mauritius, a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. Far from being a primitive evolutionary oddity, it belonged to the pigeon and dove family. Its ancestors were flying birds that reached the isolated Mascarene Islands, where the absence of terrestrial mammalian predators helped create conditions in which maintaining powerful flight became unnecessary. Over evolutionary time, the Dodo became a large, ground-dwelling and completely flightless bird.
Its isolation lasted for millions of years, but its encounter with humans was extraordinarily brief. Dutch sailors reached Mauritius in 1598, although other mariners had visited the region earlier. Written descriptions, drawings and surviving skeletal material provide much of what is known about the living Dodo, yet many details of its behaviour and ecology remain uncertain.
Permanent human settlement transformed its environment. Forest was cleared, Dodos were hunted, and introduced animals including pigs, rats and macaques entered an ecosystem that had developed without such terrestrial mammals. These pressures likely affected both the birds and their nests.
By the late seventeenth century, the Dodo had disappeared; the last widely accepted sighting dates to 1662, only decades after sustained European contact began.
Its extinction eventually gave the Dodo an importance it never possessed while alive. Today it is one of the world's most recognisable extinct animals, a powerful reminder that a species shaped by millions of years of island evolution can disappear within the span of a human lifetime.

We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
