PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Golden Slumber captures a young chestnut foal asleep in the warm light beside a timber stable. Curled comfortably upon a weathered blanket spread across the grass, the foal lies completely at rest, its head lowered against the fabric and its long legs folded loosely beneath and alongside its body.
Its soft chestnut coat catches the low sunlight along the back and shoulders, revealing the slightly tousled texture of juvenile hair. A broad white blaze runs down the centre of the face towards the pale muzzle, while white markings brighten the lower legs. The small mane lies unevenly along the neck, and the dark tail rests against the blanket behind the hindquarters.
The faded textile beneath the foal introduces muted reds, greens and earthy browns, contrasting gently with the fresh grass surrounding it. Behind, open stable doors lead into a deeply shadowed interior, their aged timber boards framing the sleeping animal. Beyond the building, fencing and leafy trees soften into warm afternoon light. Sunlight filtering through the foliage completes the scene, creating an intimate portrait of complete relaxation within the familiar shelter of the stableyard.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Domestic Horse (Equus caballus). Young foals devote considerably more time to sleep than adult horses. During the first weeks of life, periods of nursing, exploration and energetic movement are repeatedly interrupted by rest, supporting the rapid physical and neurological development taking place within their growing bodies. A foal may lie down many times throughout the day, sometimes entering surprisingly deep sleep even while activity continues around it.
Horses possess an unusual ability to rest while standing. Their specialised stay apparatus allows mature horses to stabilise much of the limb musculature with relatively little effort, enabling periods of light sleep without lying down. Deep rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, however, requires greater muscular relaxation and is normally achieved while the horse is recumbent.
Foals spend far more time lying down than adults and can often be seen sleeping fully stretched on their sides or curled with their legs folded beneath them. In a secure environment, this apparent vulnerability is entirely normal. Domestic foals commonly rest close to their mothers or in familiar paddocks and stable areas where they feel safe.
As the young horse matures, its sleeping pattern gradually changes. Time spent recumbent decreases, standing rest becomes increasingly important, and the long, frequent naps characteristic of early foalhood give way to the shorter periods of sleep typical of the adult horse.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
