PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Forest Child nestles a young Mountain Gorilla within an extraordinary abundance of rain-soaked vegetation. Surrounded almost completely by immense green leaves, the youngster peers quietly from its sheltered position, one small arm resting across the foliage as though the forest itself has formed a cradle around it.
Dense black fur covers the gorilla's rounded head and compact body, its softness contrasting with the deeply creased skin of the face and fingers. Large brown eyes meet the viewer with a calm, observant expression, while tiny droplets caught among the surrounding leaves reveal the dampness of the forest. The foliage varies from broad, glossy leaves in the foreground to torn and insect-damaged growth further behind, creating layers of texture around the youngster.
Filtered sunlight descends through the canopy from above, catching beads of moisture and illuminating the brightest greens while the deeper forest recedes into shadow. Almost swallowed by the vegetation, the little gorilla appears entirely embedded within its environment: a small dark presence in an immense living world of green.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) grows up surrounded by an extraordinary variety of vegetation. Adults eat a predominantly plant-based diet, feeding extensively on leaves, shoots, stems and other herbaceous growth, with the precise foods available changing according to location and season. Unlike some other gorillas, fruit generally forms only a small proportion of the mountain gorilla's diet because relatively little fruit grows within much of its high-altitude habitat.
A newborn, however, begins life dependent upon its mother's milk. As the infant develops, it gradually starts experimenting with the foods eaten by other members of its group. By watching experienced gorillas and exploring vegetation for itself, the youngster becomes increasingly familiar with the plants available throughout its home range while continuing to nurse.
This prolonged period of learning is important. A forest may appear overwhelmingly green to human eyes, but it contains plants and plant parts of very different nutritional value. Growing up within a social group gives a young gorilla repeated opportunities to observe what others select, handle vegetation with its own hands, taste unfamiliar foods and slowly acquire the feeding knowledge it will depend upon throughout adult life.

Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)
Mountain Gorillas survive in an extraordinarily restricted Afromontane forest landscape, occurring only in the Virunga Massif and the Bwindi region. These high-altitude forests provide the dense vegetation on which gorillas depend for food, shelter and daily movement, but they are surrounded by some of Africa's most densely settled agricultural landscapes. Clearing forest for farmland, fuelwood and other resources can place intense pressure on the remaining habitat. Protecting the gorilla therefore means protecting an entire living mountain forest rather than the animals alone.
Remarkably, that protection has produced one of conservation's most encouraging great-ape stories. Mountain Gorillas are the only great ape for which there is evidence of an increasing population, and their improvement led the IUCN to move them from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2018. Their recovery has required decades of park protection, ranger patrols, scientific monitoring, veterinary care, transboundary cooperation and engagement with neighbouring communities. Tourism revenue and community livelihood programmes can also give people living beside the forests a tangible stake in keeping gorillas and their habitat secure. With only just over a thousand Mountain Gorillas known in the wild, however, that recovery remains dependent upon continuing these efforts.
