PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Following Footsteps captures a young polar bear cub venturing a little way from its mother as it explores the snow-covered Arctic landscape. Moving towards the viewer, the small cub follows a trail of enormous paw prints already pressed deeply into the snow, retracing a path its mother travelled a minute earlier.
The difference in scale is striking. Each adult footprint dwarfs the cub's small paws, creating a pathway through the otherwise untouched expanse of white. Its thick juvenile coat catches the soft Arctic light as it carefully makes its way along the established trail, never straying far from the familiar route.
Around the youngster, little interrupts the simplicity of the frozen landscape. Pale blue shadows stretch across finely textured snow while the line of tracks disappears into the distance behind it. The quiet scene captures a small moment of growing confidence: a curious cub beginning to explore beyond its mother's side while remaining safely within the footsteps she has already made.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) begins life in one of the harshest environments on Earth, yet newborn cubs arrive astonishingly small. Born inside a snow den during the Arctic winter, a cub typically weighs only around 500–700 grams at birth, less than many domestic kittens. Hidden beneath the snow, the den protects the mother and her cubs from freezing temperatures during their earliest weeks of life.
By spring, the cubs emerge into a completely different world. They remain close to their mother, following her across sea ice as she leads them towards hunting grounds and teaches them how to survive in the Arctic. Walking in their mother's footprints can reduce the effort of travelling through deep snow while keeping the cub close to her protective path.
A polar bear cub's thick white coat, dense insulating fur and growing layer of fat help it cope with extreme cold, but its greatest protection is its mother's guidance. Cubs usually stay with her for more than two years, learning where to travel, how to find food and how to survive in a rapidly changing polar landscape.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
For more than two years, a young Polar Bear's survival is closely tied to the decisions made by its mother. Cubs literally follow her across the Arctic, learning where to travel, when to migrate, how to negotiate sea ice, where seals are likely to be found and when danger should be avoided. Young cubs can even imitate their mother's movements as they accompany her. This prolonged period of dependence is particularly important because Polar Bears must master a highly specialised way of life before becoming independent, and much of that knowledge can only be gained through experience alongside an accomplished adult.
Those first years are also the most precarious. Cub survival varies substantially between regions and years, and in populations experiencing greater sea-ice loss, fewer cubs may survive as mothers have less opportunity to hunt seals and accumulate the energy required to support their young. Until weaning at roughly two to two-and-a-half years, cubs remain dependent upon their mother for food and protection; only then must they begin applying everything learned while travelling behind her. Protecting the conditions that allow females to remain well nourished and successfully raise offspring is therefore essential not simply for individual families, but for the recruitment of new bears into future generations.
