PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
First Tide captures a young harbor seal pup resting at the meeting point of sand and sea. Its small, rounded body lies low against the wet shoreline, foreflippers spread gently to either side as a thin wash of seawater approaches. Large dark eyes look outward from the softly rounded face, while fine whiskers catch the warm light reflected from the water.
The pup's pale silver-grey coat is patterned with delicate darker mottling across its head, neck and back, becoming softer along the underside. Its compact proportions and smooth contours stand in quiet contrast to the shifting textures surrounding it.
Foamy ripples spread across the foreground, breaking into clusters of bubbles before retreating over the reflective sand. Beyond the pup, the shoreline dissolves into muted bands of water and warm atmospheric light. The restrained palette of silver, cream and blush-gold creates a peaceful coastal study, placing the tiny animal precisely at the threshold between the terrestrial place of its birth and the marine world for which it is already remarkably prepared.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) follows a very different developmental path from seal species whose newborns remain ashore for extended periods. Harbor seal pups are precocial, meaning they are born comparatively mature, with open eyes, a fully developed coat and the physical ability to move and swim soon after birth.
Most pups shed their pale fetal lanugo before they are born, emerging with the spotted or mottled coat associated with older harbor seals. Within hours, some can accompany their mothers into the water. Nevertheless, swimming ability does not mean independence. During the first weeks of life, a pup remains dependent upon its mother's exceptionally energy-rich milk, which supports rapid growth and the accumulation of insulating blubber.
Mothers and pups recognise one another through vocalisations and other sensory cues, an important ability when animals gather at shared haul-out sites. Nursing generally lasts only several weeks before weaning brings a comparatively abrupt transition to independence.
A harbor seal pup therefore enters life poised between two worlds, born on land, yet almost immediately equipped to begin learning how to live at sea.

Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)
Harbor Seal pups begin their relationship with the ocean remarkably early. Unlike seal species whose young must spend days or weeks developing on land or ice before entering the water, Harbor Seal pups are capable of swimming at birth and may enter the sea within minutes. At only two or three days old they can already remain submerged for dives lasting up to around two minutes. This unusually advanced development is an adaptation to their coastal nursery habitat, where pups may be born on beaches, rocky shores and intertidal areas that are regularly reached or covered by the incoming tide.
Being able to swim, however, does not mean a newborn pup is independent. For approximately four to six weeks, it remains closely dependent upon its mother, nursing on exceptionally rich milk while rapidly gaining weight and developing its swimming, diving and eventual foraging abilities. Mothers may leave pups resting ashore while they forage at sea, so a solitary pup on a beach is not necessarily abandoned. Human disturbance during this brief nursing period can separate mother and pup or prevent the female from returning, which is why maintaining distance from coastal nursery and haul-out areas is such an important part of Harbor Seal conservation.
