PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
First Light, First Flight captures a young Pteranodon poised above an ancient shoreline as the rising sun illuminates its outstretched wings. Perched upon the remains of weathered timber, the small pterosaur raises its narrow head towards the open sky, its body caught between the security of the ground and the immense space beyond.
Warm sunlight passes through the thin wing membranes, revealing a delicate network of underlying structure while tracing the elongated bones that support each expansive surface. A covering of fine, hair-like filaments softens the head, neck and body, contrasting with the smooth translucence of the wings and the long, toothless beak.
Ferns and low vegetation surround the perch, while beyond them the land falls towards a broad body of water glowing beneath the sunrise. Broken rock formations interrupt the distant coastline as clouds gather in luminous layers overhead.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Pteranodon (Pteranodon longiceps) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, roughly 86–84 million years ago, when a vast shallow ocean known as the Western Interior Seaway divided much of North America. Fossils are especially well known from marine deposits in what are now Kansas and surrounding parts of the central United States, regions that today lie hundreds of kilometres from the sea.
Despite frequently appearing alongside dinosaurs in popular culture, Pteranodon was not a dinosaur. It belonged to the pterosaurs, an entirely separate group of flying reptiles that evolved powered flight long before birds appeared. Pterosaurs ultimately shared a more distant common ancestor with dinosaurs but followed their own remarkable evolutionary history.
Adult Pteranodon were spectacularly adapted for life above the water. Large individuals could possess wingspans exceeding six metres, yet their skeletons were relatively lightweight. The wing itself differed fundamentally from that of a bird or bat: its main membrane was supported primarily by an enormously elongated fourth finger.
Its name means "wing without tooth," reflecting the long, toothless jaws characteristic of the animal. Pteranodon probably fed largely on fish and other marine prey, and fossil evidence indicates that fish formed part of its diet. Its distinctive cranial crest varied considerably in size and shape, with some adults developing exceptionally long backward-projecting crests.
Young pterosaurs present one of the most fascinating questions in their biology. Fossilised embryos and juveniles from several pterosaur groups possessed remarkably well-developed wings, prompting debate over how soon after hatching they could fly. Evidence increasingly suggests that at least some pterosaurs may have become airborne very early in life, rather than passing through a prolonged helpless nestling stage like many modern birds.
Pteranodon disappeared millions of years before the asteroid impact that ended the Cretaceous. Other pterosaur lineages survived until approximately 66 million years ago, when the last of these extraordinary flying reptiles vanished alongside the non-avian dinosaurs.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
