PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Fig for One captures a young chimpanzee seated within the sheltering roots of an immense rainforest tree, cradling a ripe fig carefully between both hands. Surrounded by fallen fruit and broad green leaves, the youngster occupies a small natural hollow where the great roots rise and curve around its body like the walls of a woodland refuge.
Its dark coat catches the warm light filtering through the forest canopy, revealing fine individual hairs around the shoulders, arms and crown. The softly wrinkled face is turned towards the viewer, while long fingers curl naturally around the mottled purple-red fruit. Bare feet rest against the root below, their flexible toes relaxed against the weathered wood.
Scattered figs in varying shades of green, russet and deep violet lie amongst leaf litter at the chimpanzee's feet, suggesting fruit at different stages of ripeness. Around them, moss, vines and layered vegetation disappear gradually into the dense forest beyond.
Illuminated by low golden light, the scene transforms a simple moment of feeding into an intimate portrait of a youngster surrounded by one of the rainforest's most valuable seasonal resources.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) is an overwhelmingly fruit-oriented feeder, and figs are among the most important foods available to many wild populations. Chimpanzees consume an exceptionally varied diet, but when ripe fruit is abundant they actively seek it out, travelling through the forest to exploit productive trees.
Figs are especially valuable because different fig species can fruit at different times, sometimes providing food when other preferred fruits are scarce. Across chimpanzee habitats in tropical Africa, numerous native Ficus species form part of the diet. The animals may eat the soft fruit whole, including its tiny seeds, and productive trees can become important feeding sites visited by several members of a community.
Finding fruit is not simply a matter of wandering until something edible appears. Chimpanzees possess sophisticated knowledge of their home range and can remember the locations of food-producing trees. Their movements suggest an ability to anticipate where valuable resources are likely to be found and to adjust their journeys as foods become seasonally available.
Young chimpanzees acquire this forest knowledge gradually. For years they remain closely associated with their mothers, observing what she selects, where she travels and how she handles different foods.
The little fig held here therefore represents something much larger than a meal. It is part of a complex landscape of memory, learning and seasonal abundance that a young chimpanzee must slowly learn to navigate.

Figs are among the most important foods available to many chimpanzee communities. Unlike numerous tropical trees whose fruit appears during relatively restricted seasons, different fig species can fruit at different times and individual trees may produce large crops asynchronously. This means ripe figs can sometimes remain available when other preferred fruits become scarce. Studies of wild chimpanzees have consequently identified figs as important fallback or staple foods in several populations, helping sustain them through periods when more seasonal fruits are difficult to find.
Fig trees also support an extraordinary network of forest life. Their fruit is consumed by numerous mammals and birds, which in turn disperse their seeds, while every fig species depends upon its specialised fig-wasp pollinators to reproduce. Conserving mature fruiting trees and the ecological relationships surrounding them therefore benefits far more than chimpanzees alone. Protecting diverse forests containing reliable food trees can provide greater resilience during periods of scarcity while preserving the complex plant–animal relationships upon which tropical forest ecosystems depend.
