PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Fangs of the Ice Age captures a Smilodon advancing through a snow-covered landscape as the first warmth of sunlight breaks across the mountains. Its powerful body fills the foreground, shoulders held low as one enormous forepaw lifts from the snow in a deliberate step.
Dense winter fur is dusted with newly fallen flakes, its mottled brown coat breaking into darker markings across the head, shoulders and limbs. Beneath the lowered brow, the cat's eyes remain fixed upon something beyond the frame. Two elongated upper canine teeth descend prominently beside the lower jaw, their pale surfaces catching the light against the darker muzzle.
Behind the animal, an immense Pleistocene landscape stretches toward distant mountains beneath a softly coloured sky. Snow drifts across the exposed ground while scattered vegetation emerges through the frozen surface, reinforcing the sense of an animal moving through a cold and demanding world.
Despite its famous teeth, the overwhelming impression is one of physical power. Thick forelimbs, broad paws, a muscular neck and heavily built shoulders reveal a predator constructed not simply to pursue prey, but to overpower it at close quarters.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Smilodon (Smilodon fatalis) lived during the Pleistocene Epoch, with the genus appearing in the Americas roughly 2.5 million years ago and surviving until around 10,000 years ago. S. fatalis is particularly well known from North America, where thousands of specimens have been recovered from the Rancho La Brea tar pits in present-day Los Angeles.
Although commonly called a "sabre-toothed tiger," Smilodon was not a tiger. It belonged to an extinct branch of the cat family, the machairodontines, whose most conspicuous adaptation was a pair of extraordinarily elongated upper canine teeth. In S. fatalis, these could extend well beyond the mouth, accompanied by a jaw capable of opening much wider than that of living big cats.
Its skeleton reveals another important difference. Smilodon possessed exceptionally robust forelimbs, powerful shoulders and a muscular neck, but was less suited to prolonged high-speed pursuit than animals such as modern cheetahs. It was probably an ambush predator, using its strength to restrain large prey before employing its specialised bite.
Its world contained an extraordinary community of large mammals, including mammoths, mastodons, ancient bison, horses, camels, giant ground sloths and other formidable carnivores.
Near the end of the Pleistocene, that world changed dramatically. Climate and ecosystems shifted while humans expanded across the Americas, and numerous large-bodied species disappeared. Smilodon vanished with them, leaving its spectacular fossil remains as evidence of a predator that survived until remarkably recently, tens of millions of years after the last non-avian dinosaurs were already gone.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
